I know there are pics and stuff in the "longtravel" thread but it was getting cluttered. What is the best way to modify a Z50R frame to run an xr swingarm and shock? It doesn't have to be super sturdy as i wont be jumping with it...I just like the feel of the monoshock over the twin undersprung pogos  My plan is to run 2 bars of 1/2 inch steel tubing on either side of where that round support post is now...and remove the round post. Then drill a hole through the "subframe" where it meets the backbone of the frame to mount the shock. Is the setup in the picture in the longtravel thread the best way to go about it?

You haven't rode my twin shock bikes. It's all in the shock selection. However, I commend a custom project, so go for it.

Showa shocks made by Daytona are awesome, and are gas-filled with adjustible preload. Just ditch those crappy stock shocks.

G'Day,

buy some decent shocks for your Z and you will be surprised about the changes in handling. you could move the lower shock mounts back by 2" (cut and reweld into new position, experienced welder, please!).

see below my modified Z (Jincheng Monkey Replica) with adjustable shocks and modified swingarm. we are working on Alloy swingarms (dual shocks, +60-80mm).

furthermore, there are mono swingarm set-ups readily available for the Z bikes. looks better in my opinion.....

swingarm picture above for reference only!

personally, would get a mono swingarm by G-Craft or Daytona and check they got the roller bearings installed. however, its possible to press the cheaper rubber bushings out and install roller bearings.

If you can make those tires fit, you are a fabricating genius. I'm too lazy to look up the tire and rim size, but from memory, the rim is either 3.5 inches or 4 inches wide. Special swingarm, spacers for the gearsets, etc.

G'Day,

very neat bikes! looking very good with the mono shock swingarm.

wheels....they look pretty much like 10" 130/70 or 140/70 tires on 4" rims. will be installing similar wheels / rims on my Monkey replica early next year but some fabricating, painting, power coating has to be finished.

another interesting set up is the usage of Honda CY 50 rims mounted on Dax (CT50/CT70) hubs and a swingarm of a Honda CY 50. yes, a lot of fabrication is needed but looks awesome.

now there are some really Monster Wheels being put together with CY rims, see below.

130/70-10 really stretched on the custom rims!

comparison with standard CT rims and custom rims (130/70-10).

once again, left standard rims / right custom rims.

Honda CY wheel / swingarm installation. note the brake backing plate and support.

sidenote: not sure about the Honda CY 50 bikes or CY 50 parts situation in the USA.

G'Day Dan,

long story...a friend of a friend in Germany, more to follow soon, working on something very similar but waiting for some bits and parts to arrive.....

sort of like a spacer for Dax/CT wheels and wider rims, we will get it together eventually.

another try with REAL WIDE rims but didn't not work on any swingarm, yet!

G'Day,

CY hubs are similar to CT (Dax) but CY rims are wider.

better use the front hub of a Jincheng Dax / CT replica, they have a disc brake in front. coming soon, before your retirement.....

Honda CY 50 pictured below, in case somebody not familiar with this bike.

Not quite... The CY hubs are not only broader, their outer diameter is slightly smaller. So the inner diameter of the rims is also a few milimeters smaller. In order to fit one to dax/CT hubs, you will have to grind off a bit of the dax/CT hubs. Looks nice though...

Note that G'craft 4.00 inch aloy hubs have the same dimenesions as CY rims, so they don't fit out of the box on dax/CT hubs. G'craft 3.5 hubs do fit out of the box.

Thor,

Your thread was boring and uneventful. My friends from China, Europe and I took your uneventful thread and made it a good read for those interested in wide-tire Z50's, Dax and Monkeybikes.

Just kidding!

Bottom line is you will have to forge your own path modifying a Z50 to an XR50 rear suspension, as it probably has been done, but not by anyone around these parts. It appears to me you will be a pioneer and need to document your work, and potentially duplicate it to give yourself a nice sales niche. There are a gazillion Z50R's floating around out there, and there is a market for everyone these days.

But, I'd take the easy route and slap on a 8cm over stock Daytona Swingarm, along with some 285mm Showa gas charged, coil over shocks with adjustible preload and call it a day. The downside is if you go that route, it's going to set you back $500 where you can probably fabricate something for much less.

The thread is now returned to you. :)

Dan...your kind of a jerk...just kidding. I decided not to go monoshock rear end because i was running out of time before christmas. everything is on a deadline. What sucks is that my stock shocks are rediculously blown and just function as spring holders. This is not gonna be my bike...and i dont see it getting ridden much, so i'm not gonna worry about it.
