Hello all,

It's been a while since I've posted on PM! I have a question and figured someone on here would know the answer.

Some of you may remember my Z50 cafe racer. Well, I've decided I want to get a six speed gear box and a dry clutch kit for it. The bike has a '94 Z50R engine in it that is an 88, head, cam, carb etc.

Anyways, the kits that Im finding are listed for Monkey-R's, Z50J's etc. Do any of you know if these kits will work with a '94 Z50R engine? Here are the kits I'm referring to. Before anyone asks, I've already contacted Rick at J-Mart. He said I should probably ask around to make sure that they will work.

Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

I've been advised that the six speed gearboxes are fragile and this 5-speed is the way to go.

Do you have any suggestions, Tmas?

I wonder if these stories of Fragile 6 speeds are from people who actually own one, or just heard it from someone on the internet. I own alot of this gear and I've had more failures with 5 speeds than with 6 speeds - my 20 cents worth.

Sorry, I forgot about this. After looking at your engine serial number I'd say it will work. The ZB serial number is AB22 and it's the same 12 volt cdi motor. The five speeds are good but have been known to crack first gear by kicking it over and being on TDC. The kickstarter gear puts too much pressure on first and it snaps. Something to think about. Bump starting or being a little off TDC is recommended. The more gears you fit in the case means they have to be made thinner and they are not as strong.

Excellent, thank you for the information!

I know all about breaking parts because of being at TDC. I learned how to start big singles when I was young so I always get them just past TDC before I kick them over. You learn your lesson starting TT500's and YZ426's when you're 14 years old and weigh 100lbs. :)

If and when I get these kits I'll probably pull the kick starter off of the engine so people can't jump on it and try to start it easily.
