Silver is on the top, Black is in the middle, followed by your oil ring

 

Also, The rop ring ussally has a "T" on it. The "T" is oriented at the top, or up. (FYI)

Yup! R isnt as common as T but yes, R facing up.

 

And just as a FYI The standard "rule of thumb" is any lettering or number on Piston rings, seals, even bearings... means that side out or up. Basicly the digits shoud be facing out. Generally.

 

What is the reasoning behind this? The rings don't appear to have differences on the edges of the ring on the ones I've looked at. Would think that they could put the ring diagram on the box or gaskets or a small note.

Yes and no


Not all pistons have this, but the inside edge, that is inside the piston groove can a chamfered edge. With this inside edge (usally lower) helps the rings not stick to the piston as they heat up and swell.

 

Thanks for the reply. I forgot reading something before about keeping the rings sealed under or maybe its just the fumes.
