oil leak from valve tappet cover?

I noticed the valve cover on the exhaust side of the engine had a fair amount of oil on it last night. I think it was like this from the last riding session. There's no pool of oil on the floor, so I think it is just seeping somewhere when under pressure. There is (afaict) no oil from any of the other covers.

The bolts were tight.

Is it common for valve tappet gaskets to "go bad"?

Or is it common for the oil to come from somewhere else?

What's the easiest (fastest) way to fix this?

Do I need to get a gasket (e.g. from the dealer, or mail order), or can I use some sort of "instant gasket" from the auto store?

thanks

im having an oil leak from some where on my bike also. did you get yours fixed? and what was it if you did. I dont know where my leak is coming from, but the back of my shifter (where the threads are on the lever) is always caked with mud like its leaking from around that area. It takes a while to come out and when it does its a puddle of oil left on my stand. any one know of any common oil leaks? or what this could be? thanks for all your help

I'm a bit further south from SF... like around mountain view.

I'm trying to get back into off road after about a ten year hiatus.

Right now, most of the riding I'm doing is at metcalf in far south san jose -- its about a 30 minute drive for me (which fwiw I think is too far).

I find that riding the mini track is good exercise.

I will probably also go down to hollister this summer, maybe a couple times.

Yeah.. I didnt even realize the dealer parts would be so pricey.. I figured at most a couple bucks.
