So I have an few old moped titles laying around that I acquired over the years (and scrapped the parts and or used them for various other projects around the house.)

After a recent changing in NJ law anything under 49cc (on the title) can be ridden in the streets with no additional license or tagging or insurance. Doesn't have to have pedals and can have gears as well...

I was wondering if I could build a pitbike with one of the "no-vin" frames I have and be able to ride it around with out any problems.

I talked to a couple of cops and they said as long as the vins match no one would look twice. The titles are in my name, so I can't see the real issue unless they have some kinds of picture recognition of how the bike is supposed to look and ask me why they are different in style.

I could probably have a local custom shop stamp my vins into the non vin frame, but just wanted to know if anyone has experience with doing so.

Would one of the vin sticker replacements suffice?

Thanks,
Mcaracappa

That what I'm figuring. The real question is, after building it ( supermoto style) I highly doubt it will look like a 'dirt bike' in any shape or form.

I planned on putting some pitster motard tires and light kit.. If anyone has any information I would highly appreciate it!!

Stamping a fraudulent vin number on a frame is illegal as hell. Its gonna be hard to find a shop to do it for you. You might be able to do it yourself, google it!

What kind of bike are you thinking of building? Crf50 based? Klx based?

Id get ahold of your state patrol office and see what they say. Most cops aren't gonna know the laws but if u said u got a replacement frame for it I'm sure if you talked to the right people you could do it.

DO NOT stamp VIN numbers in your frame. There is a local bunch of guys (Unique Performance) that were making the Shelby "Eleanor" cars, had sanctioning by Shelby himself (I went down for one of their events and got to meet him and get his autograph.) Only problem is they moved around some VIN numbers and ended up in the slammer.

I used an old cl70 title and a reproduction vin decal to make my crf50 street legal. Its registered, insured, inspected, and has everything that makes it street legal. I put 800 miles on it last year without any problems. As long as your not doing anything stupid you'll be fine. Yeah, it's technically illegal but who cares.

^ you'll care if your in an accedent. Your insurance can bail on medical bills if your riding a bike that you fraudulently lied to them about. So then your stuck with $xx,000 in bills YOU gotta pay for... Not mentioning any other legal recourse with the Po-Po.

I am looking to build a crf50 based bike!

I know it is fraudulent so I think I may just go to CHP and tell them it is a new replacement frame and see if they will tag it for me. I have the title and paperwork for everything in my name, none of it is stolen so I can't see the problem.

My honda instructor told me you could build and tag a custom built framed bike in you're name one time at least one time in you're name it's very common in the Harley scene to build a bike in the future owners name to keep "one" open for you're own future projects..

there's legal ways to do it, look at all the custom choppers running harley VINs, i think you have to stamp the new vin and destroy the old frame? dealers do it for replacement frames because they come with no VIN...
i worked at a shop that was chopping stock harley frames and had to restamp the VIN on the new neck, lot's of shops do it, there may be paperwork involved i don't know?

i have been wondering about this myself for a while. next time i talk to my old boss i'll ask about it.

however a crf50 that says 1979 puch may be a little harder to pull off then a chopper as a sportster....
