Fast Ace 290mm shock Info

I recently got a cheapo 290mm long 'Fast Ace' shock off Ebay for 80 bucks. It fit my stock XR70 with only slight modification. I had to chop off a section of the bracket that holds the seat down, but they still work. And I just needed some spacers for eyelets of the shock to get it to bolt down tight.

It came with a way way too stiff 1200lb spring, and I found a 17$, 390lb spring that fits it perfectly off Mcmaster that is part# 96485K211 . I just had to cut the old 1200lb spring off, as there was no preload thread left to get the collar off in order to get the new spring on.

Anyways, here are some pics. Just figured I would post it up so people can see how this cheap option works out. As you can see, I also got a cheap 'front end' kit and my bike is pretty raked out right now. Once I get a longer swingarm it should be pretty even. I would imagine that with the stock fork with BBR rods in it and the 290mm fast ace shock on the back, it would be pretty even.

its 2" of stroke but because of the ratio at which the rear wheel moves in comparison to the shock (basic leverage principles), the bike gets 3.5-4" of travel.

I dont think I lost any travel, but unfortunately didnt gain any either. Ironically, the shorter i2i Fast Ace shocks that have a reservoir have a longer stroke which will give the bike more travel. I just wanted to get the rear end raised up and stiffened up.

rebound damping is adjustable and working fine...

Spacers are just regular old washers I had lying around. And the preload collar can be turned by hand.

Im not saying this is some amazing shock it just happens to seem like an acceptable, cheap solution. I havn't gotten much riding time on it so I dont know about durability.

I just installed the Fastace shock on a bw80 Yamaha. Actually fit very well with the rebound adjuster pointing towards the front of the bike. 1000 lb spring was way to stiff for the a-frame style swingarm. Purchased the McMaster 400 lb spring recommended. spring rate is better but the shock now coil binds before it gets full travel. The Fastace spring measures 5.5" and the McMaster spring is 5". I don't recommend the McMaster spring for this application. Anyone know of other springs available for this shock?

I had done the numbers as far as how much stroke my shock has, vs. how much free stroke is listed for the spring on McMaster. I cant remember exactly what it was but it was indeed very close. I have just been running the spring without much preload at all. It was close enough that with a bit of preload it probably would bottom out before the shock.
