i have almost no clue about gearing and im wanting to get a little more torque and acceleration out of my klx 110L. it has a 13 front and 38 rear. Mostly ride short sand/mud tracks if it matters.

Your current (stock) gear ratio with 13T Front x 38T Rear is 2.92. The cheapest way to modify your gear ratio is by changing out your front sprocket; rather than your rear sprocket.

Rule of thumb; a larger ratio (greater than 2.92) gives you more torque and acceleration, smaller ratio (less than 2.92) gives you more speed with less torque.

In your situation; to gain “more torque and acceleration” you’ll need to change your front sprocket to a 12T, which will give you a gear ratio of 3.17. You should be able to climb trees vertically @ that gear ratio.

I have attached a gear ratio chart in the event you want to see other options by changing out your rear sprocket.

Danny21,

Actually that’s a very good question. By changing your front sprocket rather than your rear sprocket, you minimize excessive chain angle and chain stress. You could compensate by adding aftermarket chain guides and chain rollers. But it’s always better to keep as much chain to sprocket surface contact as possible. Also, changing the front sprocket is always cheaper than changing out the rear sprocket. Keep in mind if you change out a rear sprocket you’ll probably need to either extend the drive chain or replace it.

So who makes a 12T front sprocket for a KLX?
No one I could find... 13-16 is what's available..
The other issue with running smaller front sprockets is the added wear on the top of the swingarm from the angle of the chain.
A bigger sprock up front raises the chain above the swinger pivot point enough to keep the chain from constantly riding on it.
Not that that helps you in this case, haha.. since you're already at 13/38....
You might want to think about a stroker crank and a big-bore kit...
