i recently picked up an ssr 125 and i got it running but it was really rough, the guy told me it had been sitting for 6 months so i cleaned and changed the carb, also changed the petcock and fuel tank changed the spark plug and the spark plug coil, still no luck. when it was running it had almost a burning smell coming from it and quite a bit of smoke, any suggestions on what to do next?

well we just replaced the head it turns out one of the valves weren't seated correctly and it burned up , but it still seems to almost ground out as if someone hits the kill switch I'm ordering a new wiring harness and stator hopefully that clears it up if not I'm completely lost

At this point I'm completely lost, I just rode it up and down my street for about 2 minutes but as soon as the bike died it wouldn't start up at all but 2 minutes prior to that it was idling fine without needed throttle?

i ended up getting the bike running, i cleaned all of the connections, like the kill switch, and the main wires coming from the stator and changed back to the original carb the bike is still running a bit rough but it just needs some TLC i guess thank you two for the help

Glad to try and give back. I have 2 SSR's. One was running rough when I got it and the second would barely start up. I cleaned the pilot and main jets on both and now both start in one or two kicks and run great.

Make sure the pilot jet is clear.

yeah im gonna do some minor clean up to it, not to mention at first look around the bike the wire harness was very dirty but was expected for a dirt bike but it just didnt seem like the cover or guard was doing enough to keep moisture/ dirt out and yes im going to do that to the new carb now, these bikes seem very reliable and you usually dont come across expensive repair bills
