1972 Z50 budget "street legal" build

Been reading the forums nonstop since I picked up this mini yesterday. The owner told me it was a 74, but it looks like a 72. Serial begins and ends with a "1"

Anyway she runs! But as you can see she is in rough shape. Plan is to strip her down, paint, polish, and replace things that need to be replaced and hopefully make her street legal in the process. Not to worried about keeping it original. Would like to focus on making it look nice for the least amount of money possible... Is what we all say right? =)

So far it looks like I need the following. Please let me know if the links i posted are the wrong parts or there is better deals to be had!

-Exhaust
Honda Z50 Z50R Mini Trail Monkey Bike Muffler Exhaust Pipe | eBay
-front fender
Chrome Front Fender Honda Z50 CT70 Minitrail 50 Trail 70 Mini Bike Chopper New | eBay
-Seat/Cover
Honda Mini Trail Z50 Z50A 1972 1978 Pleated Custom Made Motorcycle Seat Cover | eBay
-new grips and run/stop switch
No idea where to get this?!
-Kickstand
-Kickstarter (current one is welded on)
-New decals!

Probably also replace the sprockets and chain while I have her apart. Any suggestions on teeth for the front and rear? I am 6' 230

I will get some better pics after I wash her!

Talked to the dmv today. Looks like I need to fill out some forms and bring the bike down in its street legal configuration. Also said I need to add blinkers. Any tips on wiring in blinkers or if there is a wiring harness I can buy that is already setup for blinkers?

I'm not saying this can't be done, but what you have in mind is very ambitious. Sourcing parts to do it will be challenging to say the least, and then whether California will give you a tag may still be in question.

This bike was never street legal in the USA. I think your best hope is to find a kit and adapt it to the bike. Your biggest issue is that most every such kit is going to be for a 12V CDI engine (which yours isn't), so you are going to have to upgrade the engine electrics (or find a new engine) to go with the rest of the stuff you need. Not going to be cheap. Break out your credit card and start shopping. These things will be what you need to start. These may not be exactly the parts you need (I think the speedo gear is for 10 inch wheels, not 8 inch), so look around till you get all you need. Best of luck.

I think you are right. I will rig it up cheaply as possible and take it down to see if I can get it registered.

Battery powered gps speedo, or maybe a bracket to hold my cellphone to the handlebars. =)

Or CHP sells the headlight with speedo built in?
I should be able to find some 6v blinkers or maybe a tiny 12v lithium battery, led blinkers and a handlebar switch

1972 Z50 Street Legal Build

Doing some research on CA laws and it looks like I might be able to get around having turn signals being my bike is older than 1973. *Note* If I end up making this a commuter I will add blinkers for my own personal safety.

I bought the 60$ wire harness from webike. Just have to figure out how to hook it up next! Also how to do the brake lights. My plan is to find the smallest battery I can and find somewhere to mount it. Do you have any pics of the battery you used and how you mounted it?

Also pulled the exhaust off and a chunk is missing. Not sure what it is called. Cam cover? If I upgrade to a 88cc kit would it include this part?

-Brake cables are sold with brake light switches integrated within.
-The K1 had a battery box already mounted... maybe you could install an RC type battery under the seat pan area. Your bike may need an AC generator and rectifier if you wish to charge the battery. Otherwise, just have the battery wired so it doesn't get charged, only to appease the law.
-The area near the exhaust port is how they were. Sounds like you're upgrading to a larger displacement bore and perhaps a new cylinder head with the 88cc kit.

Been busy cleaning and polishing! Stripped the engine down and going to replace the piston and all the gaskets etc. Got started on the rims and tires and wow! The tires are stuck to the rims.. Also the the price just keeps going up, most likely going to need new rims, and going to need to replace the wheel bearings and seals, never ends!

Got my first order from webike!! Other order is back ordered till march. :(

Anyone have any tips on how to mount the speedometer piece to the wheel?
