What is everyone doing to their TTR90's? Motor swaps, bores?

Can you fit a Honda style motor in? Giving yourself more options than whats available on the market.

Speak up and show what you got.

Anyone running TTR90"s?

Those who are, have you ever wanted to put a Honda based motor in your bike?

As you know there arent many options for these bikes as there for Honda and Kawasaki's.

Well I thought I would share what we are doing to my friends 90.

After I bought a 140 for my CRF70, he decided he wanted one. I told him it wont bolt up.

So after a little looking and thinking and holding my 70 motor up to the frame, this is what we came up with.......

Even the chain tracks straight

Upper mounts are being made as we speak.

Since most crate motors come with everything you need to make the bike run, ie: electronics, intake, carb, kicker, shifter, all the wiring on the TTR can be ditched for the wiring in the kit. All you need to get is a longer throttle cable and a straight intake tube and a slightly longer chain, about 3-5 extra links. Most kits come with an angled one. The carb is tall so it will fit just under the tank in between the 2 down tubes of the frame with plenty of clearance. (As far as we have measured)

Post your comments on what you see.

Thanx for looking

I guess TTR90's aren't that popular.

Well hopefully we will have 2 here running Honda based motors. once we get the brackets finished up and welded then we are gonna stick my old 70 motor in it and get it fired up to check how it will perform.

That is one WELL used TT-R 90. That's a nice way of saying wow that thing's been ridden hard and put away wet! Subscribed, can't wait to see how this turns out, it could perm. change the TT-R 90 game!

The donor chassis has been sitting torn apart for years when my roommate bought it. He paid $100 for it with the lost of missing parts. He has every intention of either cleaning it up and putting it back stock or put the same 140 motor in it like I have in my crf and use it as a stunt bike or keep my 70 motor in it and let his girl ride it when we go riding.

Thats the whole idea. Changing the whole game. Since there really isn't much out there for these bikes. So why not make a Honda motor fit. All the reliability and plethora of parts available.

The TTR in the back is what the 140 motor will be going in and the TTR in the front is the donor for mock up. That way the other one can still be ridden.

JUST HAVE TO ADD: I need to take new pics of mine now that it is all done, for the most part, and update my winter build. Gotta get a couple more parts this weekend.

Spdfrk. Very nice detailed information on your TTR90 build. I've seen the video you were talking about, that bike is crazy fast with that little kid on it and that kid has No Fear! I would suggest you keep looking on eBay for someone to sell a Takegawa kit for the motor. That's how I found mine, after I purchased it I saw a kit with the +R head for sale. That combination really makes power!

Sounds like useful advice, but excuse my ignorance and please advise whats a 'good' price for a Takegawa kit?

And what does it include?

And whats a "+R" head? And whats that worth?

Budget is a big deal for me, I'm not building a keeper that I'm happy t dump big $$ into, just soemthing to last until my boy is big enough for a TTR125 or YZ80...

Nice build on that TTR.

The project is kind of on hold right now. My friend isnt sure if he wants to keep the bike or not. He has the brackets ready to go but doesnt want to cut the upper mount off just yet because he doesnt know what he wants to do. And if he cuts it, then no riding till he commits to getting a motor.

The bike was for my ex gf to ride but she ended up telling me to keep it after breaking up wit me so i did and built it up to this! lol :) Its a sik 110s swingarm for a 110 and im running a works kx 60 shock with resi. A kx 60 rear shock will bolt right up to the stock ttr 90 swingarm also with some spacers, i ran that setup for awhile with my 60 style frontend too. I fixed the swingarm pivot angle by drilling a new hole through the frame to mount the 110 swingarm since running it in the stock location will have excess chain slack from a severe angle from the motor. Couple guys used to have modded 90s on here and they always had to run a loose chain mine is not as bad. The stock 90 pivot hole is smaller then a 110 pivot bolt if you were to run it in the stock spot you have to drill the hole just a tad bigger. I welded a kx 60 headtube onto the stock 90 frame and running kx 60 clamps with a set of older kx 80 forks that are built, but are pretty much the same as kx 60s. Wheels are aftermarket 110 wheels.

Im building another ttr 90 by summer or fall since i have most of all the parts and motor to be complete and it will have a kx 65 complete rear end and kx 65 frontend or i may use my other set of shortend 85 forks on it! lol The hardest part will be making a rear brake lever mount up and work with the 65 rear brake setup but that will be the last part of the build.

Nothing but some welding and fab work wont hurt. lol i enjoy doing this kinda stuff like my cr 80/xr100 conversion bike.

Its sweet when I get people looking at it when I ride past in the pits at the mx track or people walking up to me asking all about it makes me feel good that people show interest in it cuz it sure is different and i love being different then everybody else! haha

Great job! I'm sure you will be asked more questions. Are you willing to post a picture or two of the chain side of the swingarm showing the pivot hole so we can see it's location and the amount of slack on your chain? Again great job!

Thanks and yea i will try to find a pic of that side for ya or if i have to take one soon and post it! I dont really wanna let my trade secrets out it took alot of blood, sweat, and tears to build. lol It would be nice to build custom bikes or do the fab work for people i thought about opening my own shop up...

Its a gytr ttr 50 skid plate slightly modded to fit!

Heres the other side shot. The chain has just a bit of slack but far less then what normally would be with the missed up pivot angle and pics of guys bikes i have seen. Now i know i will get ask what about the top of my chain tearing into the swingarm... Remember my bike is on the stand with the rear wheel off the ground. Once on the ground and even the rider on the bike it relieves what your seeing now. I still have some slack which is ok i spent alot of time getting it to this point. I adjusted my chain to where i needed it at and kept taking links out to where it would be the best with the least amount of slack at all times. You dont want a slack chain that keeps going from tight to loose while jumping on a mx track since everytime your in the air you have no weight to coounter so it lets the chain get slack and stress will allow the chain to derail or break loose overtime. The bike actually rides alot better and handles better with the new swingarm pivot position even on a stock swingarm and a stock kx 60 shock setup i had before gave me some seat height to compensate for a set of 60 style forks back then when i ran that setup.

I have seen a kid i know get paraliyzed riding a ttr 90 with the chain slack issue derailed his chain up a jump and made him case it hard! :( So please dont think its safe to ride like that or let your own kid ride a bike with a chain that loose! This is coming from a just turned 24 year old on march 28th... lol

Damn forgot this is the old pic before my chain roller got put on but i had two different holes on the frame for one that helped bring the chain slack down also since the chain rides over that on the frame. i will have to get a newer pic with that on and the bike on the ground! Sorry bout that just noticed! lol But you guys get the idea im sure...

Update:

Its finally moving along. He got a free bike from a friend of ours, junk Coolster 125. The Lifan 125 motor is a good runner with a inner rotor kit. So we stripped it down and started mocking it up.

He will be re making the mounting plates because this motor is much larger than my crf70 motor.

Thats what I plan on doing. Use the rear mounts to attatch a bracket and cut/reweld the top one.

You have aftermarket forks though, that's probably why there is so much room BUT it also looks like you've angled the motor a little bit more than the OP which is what I'll do as well.
