It's like starting all over...Have spent most of my mini energy on vintage bikes until recently. Been meeting other PM members like Pervis, and Hunter73, and have long admired some of the CRF Elvi bikes. I know it sounds crazy, but I don't have any serious dirt minis. The minitrails have trail in the name, but it is hardly a serious dirt machine. Anyway, started collecting parts about a year ago: a polished BBR Superpro frame from a Pm member, the swinger and shock from another, the engine (CRF50 case Takegawa 106 kit.) from another, and the wheels, tires, Zokes and back brake from Hunter73, just a week or so ago. The tank is from a '74 XR75 that came on an SL70 I bought a while back. It got all hammered out and painted up the last couple of days. I have some plans for a custom seat. I know I will probably catch some grief for saying this, but I have never been big on plastics. Don't get me wrong, they make a lot of sense as far as durability, weight, and how quick you can change them out, and all you have to do is look at the before picture of the XR75 tank to see how dented metal can get, it is just that I am an old dude, stuck in my ways and tastes. Well, not completely. I did start this build with the idea of mixing some vintage tins with a modern frame. There is a chance some plastic fenders could still find their way on the bike, but only if they have that vintage MX feel. No name on this project yet...
Pictures of the dented tank, in primer, and finally sprayed with black base coat. The dents were pulled out with a weld-on post and slide hammer.

Some more pics of the tank, and tank mount. I made a mount from a piece of tube (from an SL70 handlebar crossbar.) And a bent piece of 3/16" steel. The second pic of the mount shows the mounting cushions on. It mounts to the existing bracket. The rear of the tank will require some drilling to mount, I will be using a Z50 tank cushion, the round type like on the later tanks. The tank has been sanded down and needs one more clear coat, possibly with a light sparkle in it.

Hey, I know better than to mess with kids on bikes. They're not old enough to be good and scared. They can have all the track they want in front, just don't lap me. LOL. Funny you should mention the seat. I was at work late today, and was out in the shop tonight making something that might allow an XR type seat. That high angle on the sub-frame was one of the things needing to be modified. Took some 6061 aluminum square bar, and made these extenders. The front of the extender fits over the screw bosses on the frame, so it is rock solid without the front screws even in. Lowers the seat quite a bit. I didn't measure, but at the very tip, it looks like it came down 3-4 inches. Little more in line with the tank bottom profile line. It might look better even lower, but the top of the shock canister and adjuster is going to poke through the seat if I drop it any more. Plus, I don't want it to be a lowrider. I have a pan that came on the $18 bike (an SL70.) Don't know what it was from, but it was close to the SL70 shape. If that pan gets used, I will most likely narrow it and shorten it for this frame. Then I have some fenders coming in the mail for another bike that might find it's way on this one...

Ordered some parts today: rear brake shoes, a kicker, an extended shifter, low bars, red chain guide, and black cam cover from BBR. Got some fenders in too, and messed around with them. I worked on the seat pan today, I think you are going to like the bike I am going to call "Queen Bee." More pics later.

OK, total joke on the "Queen Bee" seat. It looked so funny, it just made me laugh. Took some 24 gauge sheet steel and promptly messed up the first attempt (wrong spacing.) The second one was better. The bends are because I don't have a bead roller to make the ridges like on an original seat pan. There will be rubber spacers like the ones on the bottom of CT70's seats on the bottom of those ridges that will sit on the frame loop. A piece will be welded in around the tail of the pan, and some more welding in the front of the pan where the darts were cut out. I am going for a vintage style MX seat for the most part, but a little modern styling may get worked in as well.

Got a little more done on the seat pan. The rubber seat cushions are for a CT70, SL70, and probably a dozen other bikes, they are still available from Honda. Drilled out 3/8" holes, and used a ball punch to pooch out the holes some, like the CT pans do ( I think they did this because it makes the rubber cushion fit tighter against the seat bottom.) There is a wider band that has been welded around the seat edge. I will get pics on that later. Also got a little work done on a front fender.
