Hey gang, been a long time since I've been around these parts... Got away from riding for a while after starting a family but now that my daughter is 3 and my son is 1.5 I've been itching to get a bike again... albeit a mini bike :)

1988 Honda z50R

Found this gem advertised one evening on Facebook and scooped it up locally. She's bone stock but in damn good shape for the most part. A few things to clean up but I'd like to do a complete overhaul over time and get her back to like new condition.

I've started browsing the forums for info but there is a lot to sift through even with the search function...

Anyone have suggestions or great sites/places to acquire factory parts and or excellent quality alternatives for stuff that is no longer made?

I will need a new fork tube on one side as it has a ding in it but most of the other stuff is cosmetic with the exception of new seals and gaskets etc which most seem to still be avail.

Pease let me know what is out there, especially in the fork department. without switching to a complete aftermarket conventional style fork setup.

I would like to keep the bike as stock as possible.

I’d save that gem and go buy an XR/CRF 50 for them:)

But seriously, those are becoming very rare and very collectible, especially with a seat so fresh.

Cosmetic items for that bike will be really tricky. The black controls, black bars, seat, plastics are all unique items. Fork legs and the likes are easier to source. Partzilla sells oem stuff and I’ve had great luck with them, right down to Honda nuts and bolts.

Very nice bike!!! They are next to impossible to find around here, you can also find some oem stuff on ebay but usually overpriced. Gaskets/seals ect. you should be able to get most of it from any honda motorcycle dealer. The tank and rear plastic looks to be in good shape!!

Yah the majority of the plastics are like new, the front fender is a bit scuffed up but those look to be available.

Seems like it shifts a little rough but without a clutch I don't remember how these things normally felt to begin with.

Def need to track down another fork tube and it appears thats the side that isn't available any more... Not sure if there are any good aftermarket replacements but the hunt begins.

Bike runs great, debating if I bother doing a full engine overhaul or just let it be.

It’s a 50. Drive it till it won’t move anymore, THEN fix. Haha.

You can buy upgraded chromoly legs from places like Fast50s or two brothers and a handful of others. The fork legs get bent a lot on these when kids or adults run them into curbs, stubs, their little brothers. Any fork leg from 1980-1999 will work.

I see some on eBay, looks like they have a stash of OEM fork sets for these in Australia...

I'll keep researching things and keep an eye out for stuff, what do you guys recon this bike would go for if I flipped it?

From what Ive heard this was the only year that it had the red and white color scheme is that correct?

Yes, 88 and 89 are the only years (in this style, 88-99) that were red and white. 88 is the only year to use a decal on its front number plate of any year. It is also the only year from these style to have black bars and a black on/off switch.

Another unique feature, that appears to be missing on yours, is the clutch and stator covers were a gold/bronze color.
