I have a '01 kx65 and was wondering what's the first thing you guys did to your kx65 to get it ready .

Yes , i know tires :D , but what other mods will make it better ? For a reasonable price that is .

I will try to post a pic. later today . I gotta get the bike off the trailer in the garage , and into the house

yeap, 2.50 rims Speed Moto Company

Stock rear spokes work fine, you just need shorter fronts.

Fork springs from minibikesprings.com 20-30 weight oil:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: But i really don't know anything about suspension............

The most budget thing to help the rear suspension is to get the proper sized spring for your weight. You can also have the stock shock rebuilt/revalved/lowered 1" for a decent price.............

Some sort of hand gaurds that fully wrap around like the Acerbis or Bark Busters.........

Off the shelf pipe and reeds, Many people like the Pro Circuit or Jemco will make you what ever you want.....

You can massage on a KX85 front end very easily........ big brakes, nicer forks etc...

Tires TT92GP or BT601 imo:cool:

From there on out just whip out your credit carb and start spending until you've reach the cards limit:lol:

My bike is waaaaay budget.

Clip-ons

Stunters rear brake

Rear sets

massaged suspension like I typed out

2.15 rims (wish i had 2.50)

TONS OF FUN

Not Tires...Rims are first, then tires, then HANDGUARDS, then suspension, Then sliders, then a fork brace.

seriously???? handguards before suspension??? i've road raced mini's for 5 years now, never even held a handguard up to my bike..... but on a suspension meant for a 60lbs kid??? not gonna work.

handguards are WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY over rated.... a waste of money. i've crashed... as well as witnessed 50+ crashes in 5 years..... and i've seen ONE broken lever....... o-n-e. and what are they going to guard your hands from? there is no dirt..... so.....????

what happened to the NSF???? i have a kx65 also.... so if you need info.... you going to come racing with us this year then?????

I bought the kx65 last year from a guy for $600 , but haven't done anything with it . The fuel petcock leaks though , and it has dirt tires .

Someone told me i could motard it (which i though was impossible , but now i see it can be done)

I still have the nsf , along with 2 fiddys and a pocketbike .

I was gonna post a pic. but its -2 degrees here and i really don't feel like going in the garage right now :(

The handgaurd would be nice if it is a true motard race , but i don't think i'm gonna be going off road with this bike if i motard it .

It will be for pavement track racing .

99% of us ROADRACE these we're not real "motarding" racing them......

I don't run hand guards due to clip-ons but I do have bar end sliders. These should be run at the very least. Protects things other than the bike!

;-)

I'm a firm believer in hand guards. They've saved my HANDS multiple times racing indoors and outdoors on pavement. Crashing, pushing through traffic, etc it's nice knowing nothings going to be bumping the controls or breaking my fingers.

I run Acerbis mini's btw. And Teddy, you can run brushguards with clipons! I plan to mount a set on my GS500 before it hits the track. : )

Yea, handgaurds all the way. Theyre like 40 bucks and you put em on and forget about it. Then whenever you crash, just hold onto the bars and keep the bike with you, youll be up and going again in no time plus you dont have to worry about wearing down your bar ends or break your throttle tube or whatever.

Iwas in a race last year at BR and the rider in front of me coming out of the final turn was trying to slip past the rider in front on the inside, and his brake lever closed against the riders thigh.

Yeap he had a pretty crazy get off due to his front wheel locking up. Needless to say just about everyone caught up and passed him right before the finishline, he did push his bike across it.......... oh it was the on the last lap. He was on an NSR so hand guards are not the most svelt thing........ But on a tard its the way to go. IMHO

C'mon Stik,

40 bucks is the best money spent. I've broken three levers already and that's just because I was practicing without handguards. Rubbin is racin and I have had my brake lever pinched as well.

5 years of racin minis and never a broken lever? If you ain't crashin, you ain't going fast enough. Just messin with ya...

Anyway, I would do suspension first as well but I figured handguards would keep him riding (broken lever ends the day) and the bike already has suspension. It was just a list to get him on the track.

As much as I know suspension makes a HUGE difference, I'll agree with waiting to do it. If you get a bit of time on the bike first, you'll have a better idea of exactly what the shortcomings are in the suspension, which means you'll be more likely to correct them when you upgrade vs just buying parts blindly with no ride time.

i KNEw i'd catch some stuff from the handguard advocates.... 8)

honestly the speeds we run at... at the tracks we run at... rubbin' is NOT racin'!! we run some FAST tracks... i expect speeds to approach 100mph at the briggs and stratton kart track this season. last year was the first time we went there, and i think EVERYbody ran out of gearing!!! we require bar end sliders at the track managers request at all facilities. i see their place... its just not on anything i ride..... 8)...... primarily cuz i dont go fast enough to crash..... 8P

JUST kidding Kurlon,,,,, JUST kidding!!!!

Just showing up on the GS I'm likely to get laughs, jeers, lots of pointing, and based on current internet threats, at least one formal protest. :p Seems people think the Production Twins class at Loudon is the EX500 spec class... time to show them the light. :p

I don't have a fairing, so I don't see a problem with protecting my hands on the big bad pig iron lump as it lumbers up to maybe 90mph on the front straight. : )

my first race bike was an EX500!!! i raced against plenty of GS's & i'd say you're in trouble.....8)...... believe it or not the biggest issue was guys keeping them together. obviously were not talking about machines that were designed with racing in mind!!! i raced my EX pretty much stock. i had a muzzy exhaust on it (for ground clearance only... "power" is not a word applied to such machinery!!) and fork springs/oil. a different master cylinder... and thats it. oh.... and i had the sweet old 16" wheel model. um... yeah. i rode the piss out of that thing though.... did 3-4 races every weekend on the schedule... and did every friday practice day, all year.... and had nothing that i'd call a "problem"... i've actually thought about buying a GS lately.... older model, for commuting.

What do you guys do for the wheels . Make them both 12" , right ? I know stik , you had nsr wheels on your kx65 . Do they bolt right up

Did that make the bike heavier or rider steering input harder in anyway ?

Aside from the nsr wheels , is there another , popular brand wheel and size people use for the kx65 ?

I see teddy likes Speed Moto Company . Will 2.5 work for both front and rear and bolt right up ?

Mine is a 2001 kx65 btw .

#20 ·
Watch when you are buying front fork springs for a 2001 as they are different(shorter) than later years. If you call MiniBikeSprings, he has both nowadays, just remeber to tell him the year.

Good Luck and see you at the track,

Dan

not even close to just bolting up... you can have 12"s built... but i think they're ridiculously expensive for what were talking about... speedmoto is pretty good... i think the popular size is 2.15"

You can save your self some coin if you build the wheels your self! Cam has all goods, Buchanan spokes, and has most combinations dialed in.

building wheels is once again something some of us learned back in junior high shop class........:p

But really dude it is very easy to do!
