Afternoon guys,

Well since the local salvage yard proved fruitless, I guess its Craigslist and ebay for as many OEM parts as I can find and other shops for the rest.

I just ordered a 50 page service manual for the SL/XL. Given the state of my bike(see attached pic), I have no idea really whats missing as far as a complete resto. Or at least as complete as I can make it.

Where to start? I am thinking from the inside out probably since I need to replace the kickstarter shaft. Probably the top end needs to be freshened up as well I'm sure. Once the motor has been made up to snuff, I guess frame and everything else from there. Its the everything else that has me concerned, since as you can see in the pics, the bike is not complete and I have no idea what a complete 75' XL looks like. I am not even sure of what is on the bike if it is even stock.

Any ideas would be most welcomed.

Thanks

Sid

Cool bike, looks like it may have an old school aftermarket exhaust.
If you haven't already, you should figure out what you want from this bike. What I mean by that is;
Do you want 100% restoration and then a showpiece?
Do you want to restore to ride the thing?
Do you want to rebuild to make road worthy and only buy what you need?

Once you decide what you want to do with the bike you can go down that path. Personally I like to ride them but, at the same time I don't want it to look like a beater.
I like the barn find original bikes, from there I decide if it's a rare bike, if it is, I'll restore to original, if it's not rare and just a really cool bike, I will find as many OEM parts as possible then beef up the motor to haul my fat ass around. I also have a few that have new paint but they still get ridden and used, regardless. I am a Honda purest, so for me, I will stay with a Honda motor, however, there are many other off brand bigger displacement motors out there that are plug and play that you can install if you want that extra horsepower and torque.

From what I can see, you'll need a few things, but the hunt for missing parts is one of my favorite parts of the restoration process. I've owned several SL and XL-70's over the years and their a fun bike. There are some dudes on this forum that have some choice SL's. My current SL-70 is an all original 1971, I removed the stock motor and replaced it with a 117 cc kit motor and threw on a torque pipe. She really hauls the mail and has plenty of power for any type of riding. It's perfect for just cruising around the hood and on trails.

That shop manual is a good little book, lots of info. There are plenty of freaks on this forum that can answer any question you could ever have about your bike. Good luck on your build and have fun.

Mr. Memeseekoo,

Thanks for the reply and all good points sir.

The sole purpose for this bike is a classic pitbike that I can get around on at my sons MX races. Last year while driving it around in the haggared state that you see it in, I had more compliments and oooo's and ahhhh's than you can think of. So many "older" guys :) the younger kids could give a crap, would share their childhood stories with the bike they use to have. It was definitely cool and a conversation piece. So I thought, if I got these looks and words with the shape it is in now, imagine how nice it would be to bring it back as far as I could. It will definitely be ridden and I want as much as NOS components as I can put on it. All Honda as far as I can get. No bigger motor or anything like that. All stock with all the trimmings. It'll never see the road, only the pits.

The motor I took out of the frame last night. I already see some damage to the head. See attached pic. Where would be the proper place to go about showing my build? Would it be here? Mind you, its always budget driven so it will be slow, but it will be correct.

Thanks guys

Sid

This is the place to document your build and to get all the necessary info you could ever dream up. Nothing wrong with stock, there's a ton of guys here that restore back to stock all the time. There are also those of us who just can't resist to make it better. There is a classified forum for parts you may want to try, otherwise besides E-Bay, there are a few other sites that cater to the SL, however, some of the SL parts are not being reproduced. Sometimes I will search for a donor bike for those hard to find parts.
For stock parts try; Discount Honda Parts, Beatrice Cycle, or Marble Motors, and remember, there are a lot of engine and misc parts that are interchangeable with other bikes such as the CT-70's and Z-50's

imo for every modded one i think a stock one needs to be done as well..cause if you have no stock examples..the modded ones eventualy are normal..and then a stock one comes along and looks stunning by comparison

the more pics and documenting of the build you can do..imo..the more enjoyable for all

Wow. Thats crazy. That almost looks like it was cast that way. I guess the jug covers most of that open area when bolted up. Yes stock it will be. Enjoy that much more because anyone can go buy aftermarket bolt ons. Its the true stocker that turns the heads in my opinion.
I'm currently working on a "lot purchase" off Craigslist for a couple motors, one complete, and a BUNCH of other miscellaneous parts. Including a really good looking seat for CT.

Once I get the manual, hopefully in the next day or two, I'll begin to get into the motor to get that wasted kickstarter shaft out. Anything else that usually is suspect in there other than gaskets, seals, and the top end?

I'll begin the pics once the manual arrives. I tried the YouTube route................but I'll wait for the manuals.

Have a good night and be safe and warm for those in the NE.

The manual should be here tomorrow says USPS. Any particular special tools needed for splitting the cases and putting them back together? I have a flywheel removal tool from my sons old KX65 that might fit. I have various case splitting tools from TUSK for dirtbikes. But anything in particular for the 70's? I read something about a spanner socket for removal of something. Not sure.

Thanks

Thanks guys. Well in anticipation of the manual getting here tomorrow and me not being able to wait, I went and did a little. Cleaned it the best I could. Drained the remaining amount of oil. Removed counter-sprocket and flywheel. But as I was cleaning and getting a better look, I found a couple things that are not obviously quite right. The one picture I put a couple red arrows. The top red arrow is pointing to some sort of electrical contact that has a small hole at the top of it for the single wire next to it. The hard black plastic that houses that contact is broken. I do not even know what it is actually. The second lower red arrow points to a boss that is broke in half. Any idea what that boss is for? I have a spool gun for Aluminum so I'll take a stab at repairing that myself later. but what is that electrical thing? As dirty and oily as the stator is, the bike still ran great.

As I was pulling the flywheel, I could not quite remember which direction the flywheel nut went RH or LH. Then I remembered I have the service manual on the CT70. Then I thought again, darn, I could probably just use this manual. Same 70 design. It didn't tell me which direction the nut went, but anyway I cruised around the manual and thought to myself, "I hope this service manual for the XL is more informative on hoe to split the cases and get that kick-starter shaft out".

More to come tomorrow.

I don't see the red arrows you speak of. Are you talking about the brass screw with a spring in. The middle of it and a green wire with a red stripe?
If so, that's the neutral switch. The threads on the puller are Left hand and the nut on the crankshaft is normal, right hand threads.

Sorry, the pic finally loaded. Yes, that is your neutral switch and the boss that broke off is for the clip that holds it in place.
If you go to Discounthondaparts.com and find your model of bike, you can enlarge the parts Fiche and see the exploded views of how your parts are assembled.
