I have a stock gpx 160, what race head are people using? I see TB make a race head for 160cc big bore kits. I know Takegawa is good but it costs like $500 more than the TB head what’s the difference.

What is the stock valve size on a gpx 160? Thanks

The Takegawa is a better head hands down and there are optional cams available for it to tune for what ever bore kit you wanna run.

There are quite a few companies that make a piston to clear for the +R head.

The TB head is a great deal but doesn't compare to the power you'll get from the Takegawa head that's why it is so much more money.

My understanding is a stock Takegawa head isn't designed for the big CC motors and requires porting to get the most out of it. A ported TB head is a great bargain. If money isn't an object than a ported Takegawa head is the way to go.

when I researched which head to buy, the few vendors I talked to on this forum thought a ported TB head was better than a stock Takegawa for my XY engine with 165. Not saying your incorrect but for my application that is what was suggested. I presently have the 165, ported TB head, TB cam from AHP. Couldn't be more pleased.

My bad. You are talking about just a Takegawa Superhead and not the +R head.

The Takegawa S head and the TB head is basically the same thing. Flip a coin to which ever sticker you want on your tool box.

Either one of those heads will get trumped by the +R head in terms of hp but remember hp isn't always everything.

All these 194cc 24hp engines that I've been building, customers are having to learn how to ride all over again and I'm sure other engine builders doing the same combo's are getting the same phone calls.

and yes +R stands for roller rockers.

IMO I would just either

A: have some one do the stock head with the 165cc kit

B: get the takagawa plus R head

The TB head isn't much better then a ported stock head. we just had this discussion in another thread. So a ported TB head won't be a huge advantage over a ported stock head. Bottom line if you going to pay for a head just get the plus R and be done. By the time you buy the TB head and port it you won't be to shy from a plus R head.

To a certain point, I disagree with that as well. A worked over TB can still be cheaper than a "stock" +R and give the same or more performance. For the +R to have a great advantage over a worked over TB it needs even more money dumped into it. A lot of people don't care what head they start with, they want to maximize it either way. Eventually people think a +R isn't enough so they want it worked over as well. It's all in what you end with, not what you start with. Starting cheaper will end cheaper once the same time is put into it. All of this is dependent on who is doing it of course. Agreed though, if you have the money and not the skill, go ahead and get a +R.

TB head $169 + $95 porting by AHP nothing wrong with porting stock head. When I modify any motor I always like having the stock parts to throw back on. I can't tell you how many times I've used the stock parts because of either troubleshooting a new install or having to send out for modding or refreshing. I can't stand seeing a motor in pieces waiting for parts.

If there wasn't a problem with the cases cracking on these motors I would spring for a +R head knowing that in the future I would buy the 178/187 on the xy . From my limited knowledge and understanding it seems like a ported head and 165 is considered a good combination of power and reliability.

I have a stock head that is port with the 165 and PWK 28 carb. The set up is really nice but I want more power. My bike is not as fast as a 150 with +R and 26mm carb. I would save up and get the +R. Run for a bit then get it ported down the road. I do believe you have to get the 165 piston cut to run the +R.
