I have been running the Horstman reaper clutch for a few months now. I had problems with the basket (exploded) and cush drive (disentigrated) when they first came out. I called Horstman and they sent me new cushions, much harder, and basket, stronger. I put them in and voila, exploded clutch basket again. The new cushions are holding up fine, but the newer, stronger basket has exploded. I am running a 124SE motor and I race on pavement. My best guess is that the clutch cannot take the combo of the 124SE motor and the high level of traction on pavement and something has to give. I cannot attest to its durability on dirt, but with the tire slippage on dirt, I would assume the clutch would hold up much better.

I am going to the Takegawa clutch and 5sp now. I hope I have better luck. I am tired of splitting the cases on this motor.

so is ur reaper for sale now?

I don't think any clutch that is mounted in the crank likes to be spun to the RPM levels that you utilize on the pavement. I try to keep my 3 plate clutch (mounted on the crank) under 12K rpm's all the time. Plus, your motor is probably overpowering the clutch and you need to move to a 5 speed with the 4-5 plate clutch, of which you are doing. As you are aware, with the clutch on the mainshaft, when your crank is spinning at 12K rpm's, your clutch is spinning much slower.

well im sure they'll get him another basket so he can sell it at least..they as in horstman..

sure, I'll make you a great deal. wink, wink. actually, I am sure Horstman will replace the broken basket and I will probably just put it on my dirt mini and try that out.

This clutch is advertised to work up to 125cc. Just maybe not 16hp worth of 125cc.

The first time we took my Son's KTM 50 Sx Senior on the tarmac, he proceeded to frag the clutch, broke a spring.

The asphalt dosen't allow the slip like the dirt and I imagine is 10X harder on the clutch. Think "cush drive" like on a street legal big bore supermoto, if thiose little rubbers were not in the hub you would tear up the tranny real quick.

My 2 cents........

whats the difference between the honda motor and the kart motors that they were desighned for?

pretty sure the karts run much higher rpms that what the crfs can push, and definetly more HP. so whats the problem?

not balanced enough?

damn I hope mine holds up in my Takegawa superhead 106 with a 4 speed and Kitaco rotor kit and I am gonna run it on ALCOHOL

it will probably be ok in the dirt. we put the reaper in my buddies 88SE and it exploded too, but that was on pavement. And it was the older basket which was weaker.

the karts aren't running higher rpm's than the 124SE motors, they spin to around 15k. I don't think the karts this size clutch is used on runs the hp these motors do either, but they do have a lot more rubber on the track than the minis do so it should stress the clutch more. not exactly sure what the problem is. Maybe I am too good for the reaper clutch? jk, I know better.

8O =D> F-ING GREAT !!! #-o #-o

Something else to worry about ](*,) .

- I'm in the middle of putting one in my 106 upgrade .

- I can't believe what I'm reading here , this is making me sick .

I don't wanta wreck my motor over this . I don't have anymore money for parts if it grenades .

if you are running it in dirt, I would think you would probably be ok, but if you are running on pavement, best of luck to you. what happened to me the first time, i didn't even notice. I always take my clutch cover off when I change my oil to clean and inspect the screen and I noticed on broken piece of the basket. It was laying just below the basket. my buddy with the 88SE, his motor locked up because the pieces went everywhere and actually put a couple of holes in his clutch cover. the last one that exploded in my bike, my kickstarter actually stuck down when I kickstarted the bike and the shifting was a little off. I was changing the oil anyway and when I took the clutch cover off, voila, pieces of clutch, 2 pieces I couldn't find, which means they are in the center cases. yeah, I get to split the cases again. that's ok, because I am putting the takegawa or kitaco 4/5 speed and clutch in anyway now.
