Not very far. It's a feel thing, the brass oil jet has a larger cavity behind it. If you keep drilling past the jet you will kill your oil pressure as you'll now have a new oil passage back into the cases. Go slow, and when the bit suddenly pops forward, you've gone deep enough.

Now that's helpful.Just as a guesstimate, like 1/4"?1/2"?Just so I have an idea.I've never done it before so I don't know what to expect. Will I be able to see how deep the passage is?I'm an ASE certified auto technician so I've been in many engines.Just not drilling holes in XR50 engines.

about 1/4" you just drill that little piece that looks like its pressed in.... like Kurlon said... when you feel it first pop through thats it! dont go any further.

and Im no auto mechanic but isnt it SAE?

SAE is Society of Automotive Engineers

ASe is as stated above a certificate of "Automotive Service Excellence" I think today there are 11 different areas you can be ASE certified in

but they are 2 different things totally

I have been certified in most except for automotive HVAC and a few others i dont' remember their titles though. But that was years ago when i first became a mechanic... Now i'm a painter and just work on cars on the side

If memory serves, you can see it drill through?
yep. just watch from the clutch side of the motor (with the cover removed of course)... stuff a rag or something under where you'll be drilling with the motor layed ignition side down so that none of the shavings make it into the motor...also stuff rags around the crank for the same reason.. the less emtal you get in your motor the longer it should live

Which brings up a very good question. What is the life expectancy of a 50 engine with a TB RH 88 kit installed?Keep in mind that I don't race.I just beat my bikes around the neighborhood mostly.

When you open up the side and are about to drill, you can see how far you have to drill. You are basically enlargening a hole thats already there and you can see both ends of the hole. You just have to be careful after drilling through the hole the drill doesn't go through and drill through something else haha. Its pretty easy.
