Bros my good friend just lost his rear due to his bike. He started it in front of his house and a cop just happened to be in ear shot so he drove over. The cop decided to start asking questions and wanted to see proof of ownership. My bro did not have numbers on his frame as it was a aftermarket unit. The cop said he was not legally aloud to have a frame in use with out number. Even if he made it himself or bought it. They took the bike and gave him a misdamenor ticket for running an illegal frame. He told him the company he bought it from and they said they would be in contact with the dmv to handle stopping this illegal activity. Now my bro is out his 50 as well as going to have major legal problems. The cop said a major crack down was going to be happening across the nation to solve this type of stuff.

What state is this in? In texas you don't have to have titles for dirtbikes. I see a big problem with the cop coming onto your property and taking the bike. He may want to get a lawyer, as I don't think an unregisterable vehicle can be taken like that. Seems fishy to say the least, but if its in Cali, then I'm not as surprised. Hope he gets his bike back...

wow... thought DaKine was smoked out behind a shed somewhere and was forever missing from PM.

dude, I missed your words of wisdom and still waiting for more recipes.

bummer about your boy.

In Maine, a machine doesn't need a title or reg if it's only used on your property or closed race courses.

pretty much everywhere

unless there is a law in your state saying that you cant have any custom motorcycles....then you got hosed.

i would report this right away.

they cant take your bike unless it was being used on public roads.

you can build whatever you want to (well almost) and just becasue its custom doesnt mean its illegal.

this cop pulled a quick one on you so he could give his kid a 50.

or your not telling the whole story....

if it was on your property he has no right. Plus if the bike is used for competition purposes they normally do not need numbers. Call and complain!!!!! Dont let some asshole cop get off by having nothing better to do.

wow thats pretty dumb.... if you put your green registation sticker on ur aftermarket frame, will it be ok?

what state are you in?? laws vary from state to state as to the registration of offroad/closed course vehicles -- I think you should talk to a lawyer -- and/or check with the dmv in your state about registration requirements -- i sincerely doubt if a police officer can seize your bros bike without proof he removed a valid vin and/or the bike was stolen -- most states require serial #s even if they are numbers you properly registered --  and many states do have laws regarding the removal of vehicle identification #s -- you need to talk to somebody who knows the law and what is required -- and unless your bro illegally removed the serial#s he should probably be entitled to his bike back

and who is the cop to say it was "supposed to have" a seriel number. If your fabing your own parts=no numbers. Problem solved, go to the station, report it, get your shiet back! Keep us updated

yeah the cop can impound the bike cuz of no vin#.its supposed to have a vin# but all you have to do is go to chp with the bike and new frame with old title and tell them you wanna get a salvage title for it but make sure you have a receipt from the place you brought the frame from.if you dont have no vin# they dont know if the bike is stolen or not and with all these minis that are being stolen its good to know he was doing his job. p.s I was wondering if this was go ever happen with a aftermarket frame with no vin# watch, bbr,red baron, etc frame owners. also you guy should know if a cop pulls you over in your truck or van with a bike and the frame dont have no vin# they can impound your bike,it happend to a friend.and he got his bike back after a lot of explaning and showing the receipts to every piece on the bike.good luck on this one and a lawyer can do nothing cuz its the law.no vin# it gets tooken.these frame companys need to do something also.

you may get it back but i bet you will have to pay lots of impound fees. my buddy had his street bike impounded because they thought the vin numbers looked tampered with. they werent. he had just bought the bike from his co worker and they impounded it for 2 weeks. he had to pay a lot of money to get the bike back between the PD and the yard. total bs.

laws are flawed

Here in Aus the cop's dont sound as bad as the cop's in the usa. A few month's back now 2 of my mate's left my house, pulled out on the road and cop's caught them. They were both on the chinese bike's and the cop's asked them for the vin number's. The chinese bike's dont have vin's or somthing. The cop's gave them a warning and drove off. I ride a suzuki rm125 being japanese they have vin's. If you get caught on the road cop's take down your vin number, and sometime's give you a fine. If they catch you again with the same bike you get a bigger fine and they can take possesion of the bike if they want. For me every ride i have to ride from my house to the bush, in 7 year's of riding i have never seen or been caught. Lucky me :p If i ever saw a cop while i was on the road i would just ride off and pull into the bush.

Bros there is nothing more to the story. He was in his driveway and if your outside a cop can do as he pleases. No need for a search warrant when what he is looking for is in sight. No vin is illegal period. They may not make you register it in some states but to have an ID and a title of orgin is required. You think china would waste the time to put it on bikes if it was not manditory nation wide. Hosed or not he has to prove his case and the lawyers he called said if he was not smart enough to get a vin from the dmv then plead out his case and count the bike a loss. Even bicycles have a vin# on the frame bros.
