Ok so I went out there for the third warmup of the bike since i installed new things. the constant ticking sound shouldnt be the pistona s everythign was installed correctly, so im thinking its the valves. However, I set them to .002 but maybe I need to take the motor out and check them again. and yes I set the valves when the motor is 100% cool.

My question is, how much drag should there be with the feeler guage when setting the valves, and more importantly if they are 'ticking' does that mean they are more set towards like .003, basically meaning they need to be adjusted more towards .002? thank you guys, hopefully you can help me get it fixed.

Ok I'll leak it out lol, i don't care.

-new stock cylinder for new

-high comp piston 11:1 wiseco

-new tb race cam for stock head

yes both circlips were properly secure when installing the piston, i double checked. I also set the valve cleareance at .002 on top dead center, and yes at top dead center the t lines up with notch on case and 'o' on cam sprocket lines up with notch on head. maybe my valves are set a little more than .002 if thats what causes ticking? I hope to resolve this.

yah but that mite be for stock but there all a little difference for example my 124 super heads and G2 in a zonger the lash is .006 int and .008ex

I just watched the bbr video on it again, and it seems I have the correct drag with the feeler guage, hmm I don't get it. first i thought, maybe it just likes to tick, but then i said it shouldnt tick, what are your thoughts.

Bigger cams need more lash sometimes but more lash is not going to take the tick away.

Are your valves clearing the higher compresson piston? How much clearance do you have there?

Pull out the stator plate, make sure the cam chain is tight enough with the tensioner in, I have seen some weak tensioner springs.

Also, do you have a forged piston in there? Forged pistons tick sometimes even when the motor is fully warmed up.

Also, if you look on bbr, he is runnign a takegawa super head, and he sets his at .003 , so u guys setting them at .004 or .005 seems odd to me, but you guys are more experienced. i would think though that the bigger the gap, the more likely valves are to tick?

Again, are you running a forged piston??

Are you sure the tick is valves?

no i'm not sure, at first it did sound like the piston, and what do you mean by a forged piston, I am running a 39mm high-compression wiseco 11:1. I thought it was the piston, so if it is, and everythign on it is installed ok, will that ticking noise be ok and just stay or what. and YES, I didn make sure the piston was the correct way with In mark up.

You make mention of a Wiseco high compression piston, but you do not mention whether or not it is domed. Running a stock 39cc cylinder and a stock CRF50 head, the stock 50 piston is flat-topped. If you have any type of dome to the Wiseco piston, possibly, it is hitting the valves, or the head itself.

Just my .02....

No the piston does not hit the valves. I sold this piston to him after finding out i couldnt run it in my race series. It bever hit the vavles and if it did it would maybe a few times and then i think the valve would either break or bend. i think its just the sound of the new motor. Once you start modifying it its never gonna sound the same again. My valves tick a little louder then stock. so as long as nothings hitting run it.

Thanks ryan, and yeah thats what I'm thinking. There seems to be no problems what so ever and the valve clearances are correct. I may adjust them to .003 to allow for the tb cam before I go out and race it. It just seems to be like Ryan said, a 'new motor noise' since I have upgraded it. I think I am ok as aI have warmed it up several times and revved it and all seems well. Maybe the new sound is some extra power ;-)

Youve got nothing to compare your results to so your freaking out about it. I was the same way for awhile. But you jus tget used to and tell yourself it supposed to. You did nothing drastic excpet drop a cam and piston in so the valves are gonna sbe louder since there moving more with the bigger cam and higher compression piston. get sound clip of it up.
