Holes at the bottom of a tank...generally bad. Holes at the top...generally badder. Most of the tanks I have encountered with upper tank rusting to the point there are holes are too rusted to save. In case you are interested: Fixin Tanks: getting bar knob dings out of hardtail 50 tanks.
Thanks man! I appreciate the info. I think it's beyond saving, or trying to save it at least. I cleaned few more spots on the bottom out of curiosity, only to find more holes...

First hole I found on the top...

Two more near the outlet...

Several more on the bottom right side...

I quit looking after finding these and will chalk it up as a loss.

Got a new tank from TB on the way.

Thanks again Davmo

I got the frame paint ready this afternoon. I'll go over it in the morning with some fine sand paper and wipe it down to hopefully paint it tomorrow or Sunday. I think that leaves just the peg mount to be cleaned up, and everything will be ready for paint aside from the TB tank coming next week.

I hadn't really planned on getting any number plates, but I randomly found a piece of 1/8" aluminum at work that I forgot we had. It looked like it was just wide enough to be pretty close to the height of a stock number plate, just eyeballing it. So, I printed off a picture of a number plate sized so that it would be almost as tall as the aluminum I had. I cut it out and traced onto the aluminum and cut it with the jigsaw. I plan to paint it black and I have a cool, red Honda Minitrail sticker for it. I'm just going to go with one number plate on the front.

I like to go on night cruises with my minibike when we're camping, so I needed a headlight. I got a light that is marketed as a mountain bike light. It's pretty bright and should do the trick. I mounted it on a handlebar extension, also made for bikes to mount accessories.

Will these xr70 forks bolt directly onto your z50 frame? or will you have to modify or add something for the triple? I like the direction you are going with your build.
They're a direct bolt on. You have to modify a z50 hub if you want to use that, as the crf70 forks are narrower. Glad you like the build. I think it's going to turn out pretty sweet.

Yesterday I got the frame, swingarm, rear hub, brake panel, foot brake lever, rear wheel, and front number plate painted. This morning I painted the peg mount and the riser bracket I made. I did the peg mount, rear hub, brake panel, and number plate black. The rest got painted red. I'll paint the new tank when it arrives next week. Other than that everything else is pretty much ready to go.

I cleaned the motor up some this morning. I didn't get too crazy, just a little degreaser, rinse, and wipe down. Then I polished up the cases a little with the dremel.

Here's the motor cleaned up...

Thi original kill switch isn't in terrible shape. It still switches fine, the aluminum has oxidized some, and the plastic switch is sun faded. I polished the aluminum back up with the dremel, and then just took a red sharpie and darkened the it back up.

I made a little more progress. I did hit one snag... I didn't realize, but I had ordered the wrong throttle tube. So, I won't get to take it for a test ride this weekend, but it should be ready to go next week. I got it wired up last night and I have spark, so that's good. I had to cut the wiring harness apart and do it all myself because it wasn't plug and play, but no worries. I just have to mount the carb, run front brake lines, install the throttle tube and grips, tidy up and fasten the electrical, and put on the '86 tank decals. It's been a fun project, and it's nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm sure anyone that's used an xr80 swingarm, has seen the issues with the rear fender. I guess that's why I see a lot of trimmed ones.

Example of the misfit and terrible lines...

I decided if I left the top mounts alone, and swung the bottom towards the tire it would be more in line with the right look. I had to trim the bottom section off and drill new mounting holes, as it obviously wants to hit the swingarm when you move towards the tire. I made some tube spacers around "2 inches long with one side angled to sit flush on the fender rubbers. I used 70mm bolts. It worked out great.

Tube Spacers (3/8" ID steel tubing)...

Much better...

After the fender, I installed my foot brake pedal and cut a piece of 6mm threaded rod and coupled it to the stock rod...

Here's how she sits so far...

Oh yeh, gotta make a kickstand too!

I got the wiring ready to go this morning and mounted the intake and carb. I went ahead and ran the throttle cable as well, as tracking shows the grips and throttle tube should be here tomorrow, along with the Minitrail sticker for the front number plate. I put the tank decals on and a few other stickers, then ran the front brake cable and cut an extension rod to mount reach the brake. Should be able to go for a test ride tomorrow...

Mounted coil and wiring tidied up...

The black box is the battery for my headlight... I can unhook that connection and plug in the charging cable...

Front brake setup...

Sitting and waitng on grips... excuse my makeshift stand until i make the kickstand

I dig it, how bright is ur light? The handlebar mount for MTN bikes or just 7/8ths bars?
Have you ridden it yet? If so how do you like those shocks? I have the same ones on my z but it's a long ways from being ridden. Just curious, I've bounced on em but that's about it hahaha

Your bike looks good, I like these 80's z's they look and feel so stout.

Thanks Brother! Light is very bright. I wish it had a little more off a flood pattern, but it should suffice for what I need. It came with a little tail light as well. I have it mounted at the base of the right rear shock. I haven't ridden it yet. Ordered the wrong throttle tube, but the new one should be here today, so I should take a test spin this afternoon. Shocks seem good. I can't imagine it not being an improvement over stock. I'll probably end up tightening them down a little, just based off of some bouncing like you've done.

She's pretty much finished up now. I got the kickstand made today, but still have to paint it. I test rode it Monday afternoon after I got the correct throttle tube in the mail. It fired up fine and runs good. It needs a little tuning on the carb. The motor was used and had sat up for a bit. Shifting was really bad the first day. It's gotten a little better over the last two days with a little clutch adjustment and some cruising around the neighborhood, which I can't do too much. These 88's are loud. I'm hoping things just need to get freed up from sitting, before I have to take the cover off and have a look. I'll get it sorted out though. Otherwise, it was a fun build and I'm happy with the end result.

I appreciate anyone who answered questions, passed along advice, etc. This was my first tear down and rebuild of a bike like this.

Did you order a replacement OEM throttle tube from Honda, or an aftermarket one that is longer in length?
This guy right here... https://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-HO...141-147-030/201569458036?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

...Not directly from Honda, but OEM honda parts. Southside Honda in Louisiana I believe.

The first one I bought was too big to fit in the stock throttle/kill switch housing. I believe it is for an xr50 100 or 200. It was only 9 bucks though, so it didn't hurt my feelings too bad.

Hey, while I've got you here, I was thinking about getting a grab bar. Would something like this work? https://japan.webike.net/products/21695587.html

Or are they just for the older models with the high seats? I can always make my own, but these aren't a bad price. With the bike being heavier than stock, I'm worried about damaging my seat pan by picking the bike up by the back of the seat. I'd like to have a grab bar for loading it into the back of my truck. If it does bolt up, do you think it would stick up a lot higher than the seat? Keep in mind my seat is slightly taller than a stock seat. I've tried looking for pics where someone may have gone this route, but I haven't found much. I did see where member RAZZO had a daytona grab bar on his girlfriends' z50r. I think it'd be a little tall for my taste though.

Thanks,
Nathan

You would probably get much better information directly from RAZZO, Nathan, I'm not familiar with grab bar fitment at all. Mike would be the guy who can help you, shoot him a PM. I know he hasn't spent a lot of time on here lately, he is building a house and it is keeping him busy.
