The SDG showed it's first sign of weakness this morning. The kickstarter started making a loud knock on the downstroke, then failed completely. I have not removed the clutch cover yet because we were riding to work. But I will be looking at it this afternoon. I think a few guys have had this problem already. What was the outcome, how much did it cost? Please don't flame me about getting a new motor. That option is on the table but I would like to attempt to remedy the problem.:(

hey, first id like to say hi to everyone, as this is my first post. i have an sdg 107 motor in my crf50, the problem you are having is in fact known with sdg. they have put together an update kit that is "supposed" to relieve this problem. the 2004 models have weak transmissions, everything from jumping out of gears, weak shift forks, bad kickstart shafts, loss of gears etc. you could see one or more of these problems. my bike started to hop out of third for a while. then i got the kickstart problem like you, immediatly followed by a loss of fourth gear (just grinds, with no forward motion), and third gear is like neutral. anyways, they admit the fact that it is a problem that needs to be addressed and that depending on when you bought the bike and where, they will either cover it in full or they will cover just the parts. i ordered the kit, the part number for the complete kit which includes a new transmission, kickstart assembly, rh side crankcase is 111206 you can contact SDG directly at 1 (714) 258 1224 and ask for Harper in parts and warranty. i just bought the kit, it was $199.00 because they told me they would only cover the parts, not the labor. to do this job its like 4.5 hours or so it would just be cheaper to buy the kit and do the job myself. let it be known that they are pretty slow on getting the parts shipped, its been 14 days now and its not here yet.

reply back if you want pics as i do the job, ill post them. as i do this trans repair kit, splitting the cases is needed so at this time, im putting a takegawa superhead 124cc piston kit in. the cases are already bored , just the cylinder needs to be. ill post my results when i get it in. good luck with yours!

Best of luck to any of you with SDG problems...

My old SDG motor is in the Classified section for sale (best offer)... I'll take anything for it at this point.

I called SDG probably 20+ times and no ones Gives a bloody $hit! I would love for someone here to get me in contact with someone at SDG that is warrantying these pieces of crap!

No returned phone calls and I'll give ya a dollar if you even get to talk to a human being...

Seriously... I left soo many messages.. very polite and professional.. But that this point I'm considering putting it in my truck bed with tailgate down.. Throwing it in reverse and slamming on the brakes,... Nothing would make me happier than to see my blown up motor (that does not kick start) nor have a 3rd or 4th gear, go flying through their glass window!

If ANYONE can contact or has a contact with SDG.. Please PM me their #...

Thus far I have already replaced the engine with a Chinese GPX motor that RIPS over the SDG and Trouble free!

Way to Rip off your fellow Americans SDG.. Selling a bike that Grenades after 4 weeks of mellow riding! What did these things cost? $2,200? haha..

ZERO Customer SERVICE! Oh yeah and this Harper guy you speak of.. This is the SAME guy I was told to call! hahah.. Yeah, 20+ messages later and nothing! I also live in So CAL (where they are located) and nadda! Hey Harper! Call me man! I gotta 2004 SDG (Still Don't Go) and guess what.. It still ain't goin...

This was my rant.... Thank you for listening!

I don't mean to be a Di*k but the frustration has taken over at this point... Sure Harper has many many messages to return but I would think after 20+ messages I left he would call back :(

It sucks to call the SDG # and get nothing but Voice mail.. I think they realized that there are already tons of Chinese bikes out there for better prices... I'm pretty sire they are packing up their $hit and leaving the scene. (I would, making an inferior product that riped off fellow Americans)

Thanks for all of the advise guys. It seems this Harper fellow is tricky to reach. I have left a few messages so far but to no avail. I have the utmost confidence that I will get this problem resolved with SDG, however, I hope it does not take as long as we might think.

Little Bikes...welcome to the forum. Please post the recipe for this engine build you have planned. The owner of this bike is not opposed to making power while his motor is disassembled.

I talked to Harper today (late afternnoon). Seems like everythings gonna be alright. As lil bike stated before me, the parts are covered but the labor is not. That's ok, i was going to build it myself.

Indetrucks... have you tried going through your local dealer? The warranty process centers around paperwork provided by an SDG dealer's service dept.

All I know is Harper and the guys or girls at SDG never returned a phone call.

When you call ANY number at SDG it goes straight to a voice mail no matter what time of day. What kinda business will not let you talk to someone.. Shoot, I woulda been happy talking to the Janitor at that point.

I left prolly 5 + messages with details and even dropped a few names likt Smitty (who used to work in Harpers dept) Still nothing.. Smitty even told me he talk to Harper about my problem and said he was waiting for my call..

Still nothing.. I take it SDG's product is so bad that the phone lines were locled up and they had to resort to a message only bassis (with no call backs).

Take the bike to the dealer? So the dealer can charge me $65+ an hour for the labor? Great, parts are free but I have to pay for the labor? Why can't I do it?

I already replaced the paper weight with a GPX (prolly SDG's sister motor) Only time will tell how strong it is.

Hey, Next time you talk to Harper have him call me up!

I'll PM you my number..

Thnx..

Oh wait.. lemme guess.. Since the motor was removed from the frame they wont warranty it now? They act like these motors are some kind of Mechanical Marvel.. This simple design has been out longer than I have been alive (29 yr's)

Sorry to rant on but you can imagine the frustration.

Indetrucks...I got voice mail about 6 times yesterday before a human answered. Regardless, you should go to your dealer and get them to work with you. All they have to do is order the kit. SDG warranty actually bills the parts to the dealer on a 30 day pay scale(net 30). Have your local dealer draw up a repair order that shows they did the install and you paid the labor (even if they never touched the bike). When SDG recieves the repair order (fax), they credit the charge. I know this is probably a little to late for your situation, but SDG does have a system set up for this. How do you like that GPX motor. The owner of this SDG seems pretty interested in fixing his motor, putting it on a shelf, and getting a GPX125.

Problem is the motor is already out of the bike and I don't know of any dealer that will take a look at just the motor..

I'm already trying to unload the SDG motor in he classified to anyone with the best off by Sunday night at 8pm..

GPX is holding up fine. I rode one at a street track and it was a blast and pulled way harder than the SDG.

I see em all day at the dirt track and seem to be holding up fine. I just installed mine last Sunday so I haven't had a chance at the track yet.

The TWO things I don't like about the GPX is:

-1st gear feels like a granny gear in an old truck.. Kinda useless.. Luckily there are 3 more.

-Neutral is VERY VERY hard to find.. Might as well turn it off and look for it with the bike not running. Best luck is putting it in secend gear and shifting down to find it. 1st gear and going up to find it is rather hard.

I bolted up the SDG carb with the intake that came with the GPX and it started right away and ran perfect.. No adjustments needed.

See this thread for a better write up of the install..

i cant believe you are having this much trouble getting in touch with them. yeah, someimes i have to keep calling them, but 8 out of 10 times they call me right back. i just got my update kit in today and the papers it come with say the countershaft is a larger diamer to prevent bending, or breaking under stress. it also tells you during assembly to leave out a particular washer. i will be starting my project motor in the next couple of days. but back to the sdg issue; realize that they do in fact need to work with dealers only and that you pretty much can only ask about the order, they dont sell it to you direct to the consumer. its sucks but its just how it is. also the right side crank case that it comes with isnt painted, i just thought id note that it wont match the gunmetal paint that the engine is painted. any ways, id try leaving a digfferent message, try to sound like you are the dealer, i ordered through plaistow powersports and when i called i said " hi harper, i ordered part number 111205 (i posted p/n:111206 earlier sorry this is the p/n)from plaistow powersports in plaistow nh, i was just wondering the status on this transmission update kit? are there any items on back order, i know the base gasket was. is it in yet?" he thought i was the dealer, he gave me all kinds of info, i was talking to him for like 15 min. theres another guy you can try to ask for, chris, he was the one who gave me the tracking number on its shipment. good luck to all the sdg people, ill be posting as i work on my engine.

Yeah, keep us updated.. Thanks!

I'll try a couple more times before I unload the paperweight..

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Inde just go down there and drop your motor on this harper guys desk!!!! Then pull down your pants and leave a huge terd in his chair! I would not put up with that sh*t after I spent 2200 on it! Go down there for real and get in contact with harpers boss im sure the ceo, president, vice president or whoever else would love to hear that no one at SDG is doing there job!

At this point the damage has been done.

I gaurentee their sales have dropped a pantload and at this point they are just trying to avoid lawsuites...
