Looking for some help deciding a direction.

My son is 8 and has been on a CRF50 for a couple years so for his birthday last September I got him a KTM 50 (two stroke). He has managed the change pretty good until a couple of weeks ago when he looped out the KTM. He is a little scared of it now as he has started riding the crf again but you can tell he is not having any fun on it (understandable going from 10hp to 2.5). I need something between the two, so I am thinking of either bumping the crf to an 88 or detuning the ktm. I would rather him stay on the KTM as it has disc brakes and better suspension. He is on the short and stocking side so I need to keep my seat height in under 23".

My only options with the KTM is restricting the exhaust and putting some kind of throttle stop on it. Neither of which are appealing as with the centrifugal clutch it takes so much throttle to even get it moving (I have the springs in it as opposed to the washers). I am thinking I need to be in the 5-8hp range.

Which caused me to think about bumping the crf to an 88. I have looked into the TB 88 kit with and without the head and was just wondering what is really needed with each one and what you guys would recommend.

Do you need the HV oil pump with the stock head 88 kit?
What kind of exhaust are needed with each kit to make them work, same with carb modifications?
Do either require a clutch modification? He is about 85 lbs.

I am leaning toward the base kit however after riding a 150R for the last month a small high revving four stroke sure is a lot of fun.
My other consideration is buying a TTR90 and calling it a day, but where is the fun in that?

keep him on the ktm.. overall better bike for him.. my son just got a rm65 and I had to put a washer in the header pipe(expansion pipe) to mellow out the power band of the 2 stroke.. the crf will be fun with 88 kit but no where near as fun as his ktm.. just my .02

The KTM is pig rich now, the spooge is almost unbearable. I have thought about a restrictor plate for the intake side, tried to find some ideas but weird as it sounds not a lot of people trying to slow these down.

Where would be a good starting point on the exhaust washer (i.e. reduce by 20%, 35% or 50%)? Do you rejet afterwards?
