I meant to make a thread when I first built this bike, but ended up forgetting to, so I figured I'd make a thread on the rebuild of it! Haha

Anyway, here's a few details on the bike.
Suspension: RM85 forks, and shock, setup by MotoMods.
Motor: Bore kit, with head work done by StorminNorman, and BBR's 26mm carb kit.
Misc: Custom made triple clamps by Topar Racing, FMF powercore 4, with powerbomb header, KX85 front number plate, restyled KX85 front fender, and a shit ton of powder coating.

Here's how the bike started out

Literally the day after I got done building it.

At it's peak.

How it sat Monday just before the tear down began.

Tear down begins

Got the motor out. The first time I did this, it was a PITA! but I had it out 15 minutes after the last pic was taken.

Then tore the motor down, so I could send some stuff off to Stormin the next day.

Now today, I started taking the roller apart, so I can get my suspension rebuilt, swap out frames, and do some other stuff.

And now, as it sits.

The plan for it is some more motor work, 28 carb, rebuild the suspension, frame swap [modded this frame to run CRF pegs, like DoPayToPlay did, but not a fan of them anymore], re-doing some PC, and fresh graphics. I'm hoping to have it back together by the end of August, so I have time to test everything out, before the Stillwater Mini-X series starts. I'll be sure to update this thread as it progresses!

why not just ride a stock 150r ? Would imagine it would blow the doors off a klx140 ....

Looks fantastic. I see that you went with the 14/17 inch wheels on the rebuild. What's it take to get that RM85 shock to work? Did it clear the frame? --L*64

Thanks! Yeah, I'm not a fan of the big wheels. The small wheels make it feel more like a pitbike to me, although I wish I had the extra ground clearance the big wheels give you. Just took a little cutting and grinding on the top mount to make the RM shock work. It cleared the frame about the same as the KX85 shock.

140's are legal in the pitbike classes we run here (usually they are open to all air cooled bikes) and there's a pair of classes I can race at Stillwater on it. I couldn't race either on a 150R.

Your build is boring.... Ha not!! I love this bike. Maybe one day I'll actually hop on it.
It was already the cleanest bike around. Freshening up even more??
Keep up the good work.

Haha. Thanks man!
Yeah, you definitely need to ride it. You'll probably end up wanting one though! Lol

Looking good Chad! I bought a new 250F a few months ago so I haven't been on my 140 in a while.

Have you done anything to the clutch? Last time I replaced the plates and springs in my 140 I noticed my basket was getting pretty notched.

And KLXRacer, I think these 140s are a lot more fun to ride than a 150r. They ride completely different. My old man who normally rides 150r's actually rode my 140 the other day and commented how he had more fun on it. They have a big enough seat that you can corner them pretty well compared to a full size bike and since they're slow and heavy you can just about literally ride them wide open all the time.

Thanks Chopper! I saw you got a 250F, you got that thing looking sweet!

Only thing I've done to the clutch, is put HD plates and springs. Didn't notice any damage to the basket when I did that.

Definitely a really cool build. About the 85 shocks on this bike-- by the time you get them set up, I think you're better off getting RaceTech or somebody else to build you a shock with the correct amount of travel and correctly valved and sprung. I'm planning on going that route with my Mod 150F when I get around to it.

Everybody I've ever let ride my stock 150F gets off of it and says, "Damn! This thing is alot of fun!". I've had 2 150R's, and they ARE fun, but only on big bike tracks. Too much power to have fun with on smaller tracks. If you could cut the power by 1/3 somehow-- then it'd be fun. ---L*64

Oh yeah it's looking pretty fly. It is crazy fast for a stock motor, a lot stronger than the last 250f I had. My wife and baby son have been coming out to the tracks with me and it's been a lot of fun. I'll probably go to River Valley next Sunday.

Anyways, don't mean to thread jack. Where did you get those wheels built? They look great.

Just curious, what would a shock from Race Tech cost? I'd imagine that would be pretty expensive. Luckily, I have a buddy who used to run a shop, so he hooked me up with setting my suspension up.

Oh I bet man! I'm sure EFI has really helped those motors. I've been going out to RV on Friday nights. The night track is perfect for the 140s! You'll have to try to roll out for one. We actually had a decent size group out there last night.

Those are actually just the stock hubs powder coated, and then pro wheel rims and spokes. I wanted to get a set of built wheels from like Dubya or somebody, but I just couldn't get myself to dump that much money in a set. I think I only have like $300 in these wheels.

The RaceTech setup would HAVE to be in the $500-$700 range I'd imagine. If you spent $100 on a used 85 shock, then another hunnert for the correct spring, add another two hunnert for a rebuild and revalve, and you're at $400. It still will have too much travel for the available ground clearance IMO. I'd rather spend a few hunnert more and get it perfect w/o any mounting drama. It's just how I think I guess.

Awhile ago I was thinking about morphing a KLX140L rear shock, and a KX85 shock. I was thinking about cutting the body somewhat shorter n the 140 shock, and machining the lip so it would be the same as stock, only shorter. Then I was thinking about slightly shortening the shaft of a KX85 shock, and running that in the 140 body. That would be a stock 140 shock that would yield 9.75 inches of travel, and fit like it belongs there. Then I was going to slightly mod the stock linkage to achieve the correct ride height, w/o comprimising the stock leverage ratio of the linkage. I had also thought about reconfiguring the entire rear end to accept a KX85 or 100 rear swinger and linkage. THAT would be a sweet project!

I may get around to working with a 140 someday, but the 150F is alot less work if you could imagine. I like the 140 alot though, and it's got quite a few things going for it including the rear disc brake, and the ability to run the 14/17 inch wheels. Next you gotta figure out how to get the Thai kickstarter on it. --L*64

Damn, that's not too bad. I'm right there with you, I'd pay a couple $100 more to have something that's perfect for it, and bolts up with no modding or any problems. If I didn't already have my stuff all done, I would have considered going with a custom built shock instead.

I've tried looking up the parts for the kickstarter, but I can't seem to find anything. I like the E-start, and wouldn't get rid of it, but having the kicker as a backup would be nice. We went up to Stillwater once for a race, and when we got there, the battery on my buddy's [Blake] bike was dead. Bump starting it the whole night, and the next day was a PITA!

BTW, here's a little update. Did some cutting on the frame. Still got a little more to do, but my back decided it had enough, and kept me on my ass today.

Also cut off where the kick stand mounts, and where the stock linkage shifter mounts [I run a modded KLX110 shifter to get rid of the linkage]

For comparison

Easy 10lbs right there! Lol
