Hi all

Just had a crazy idea. Do you know if it would be possible to mod a Z50 frame to accepts a mono shock swing arm. If I had the know how and a spare frame that I wouldn't mind destroying I would try it.

The link below is just to show you what the swing arm could look like. Monkey Bike UK Kitaco +15cm Monoshock Monkey Aluminium Swing Arm

Monkey Bike UK G-Craft +6cm Monoshock Monkey R/RT & ZB Swing Arm

This one looks like it has potential:

It would be very kool.

Thanks

A friend of mine copped a set of aluminium adapters to fit a ZB swingarm on a Z. This set is very hard to find and he actually got it for 300 bucks i think, then he went to a local business back here in France, specializing in CNC machining and asked the guy to make a couple of these sets for his different bikes... the result is tricky!

you can either fit a G-craft or stock Zb swinger as well as any aftermarket shock designed for the Zb. The upper shock mount doesn't clamp on the back bone of the frame under the seat, but two plates hold it.

I don't have any pic of it, sorry

Why stop there?

Might as well just get a single-sided swingarm.

G-Craft anyone?

different bike, I know.

Over Racing makes 'em too!

It sounds like you just mean mono shock though. . .

Wow that frame is a work of art. It's gorgeous!

I think you posted the wrong version, that one looks like a zb/monkey-r frame. (check the tank mounts)

60650 monkey R single side swing arms

The single side swing arm for monkey R was born. The rear wheel processes 12 inch wheel for sea bass and ZZ has installed.

That bike has an engine with a vertical cylinder.

I'm in fabricating mode after such a success with modifying one of my boys xr50, so reviving this thread... on my other sons z50r I'm thinking of cutting out the rear main seat support and adding instead two thinner supports on the outside for a single shock to pass through (basically like all monoshock bikes have) then run a high forward mounted upper shock mount. This would give you the ability to run a taller rear single shock instead of the tiny shock that most kits come with that has a clamp on the existing seat support. The area it opens up appears to be dead space not being used currently by anything on his Z, and it doesn't look like that big a job, and it seems like you can get mono alloy swing arms easy enough for the Z ... its just the shock length & placement that look wrong.

Can anyone see any issues with this or would like to comment ? I'm open to any suggestions.

PS Here is how my sons XR50 looks after modding, so I'm just on the path of giving them equal weaponry !! .

Here's the concept:

So I grafting on a KTM front end on to the Z, but its the rear that will be challenging unless I keep to dual shocks.

Thanks for all the feedback on the XR. Seat height I'll update with a measurement tonight, but surprisingly it isn't that high - still has 10" wheels, but with 9" travel in the rear and about 8" up front it soaks up everything in its path like my fullsize. Its scary that no matter what you jump you just can't seem to bottom out the suspension. Hence my quest to lift the bar on the Z50R also.

VillanMotorsports thanks for those images ... thats right on the money for what I want to achieve and you have confirmed it is possible, so I'm going to do it ! I've decided to move away from the first aftermarket mono shock swingarm I've looked at - its +18cm longer, and appears too long for my purpose and looks specifically designed for running 10" wheels and above. I'm thinking instead of adding the lower shock tab to a +10cm swingarm on the cross brace, same as the 50 caliber swingarm you see on the XR50. These swingarms are pretty cheap and whilst unfitted the tabs are easy to get welded on. I'll leave both the dual rear shock mounts to temporarily run std shocks whilst I fab up the top mount and source a suitable single shock....sounds like a plan doesn't it !!

Again many thanks everyone and I'll post up some pics and build comments when I've made progress. Here's the before shot before the suspension makeover.

Cheers, Darrie
