I picked up a CT70 that "wouldn't kickstart" and ended up splitting the cases to find a few broken gears on the transmission. I had a few different 3 speed transmissions from a Z50 in a box and was able to find the right gears to replace the broken ones. When i assemble everything per my clymer manual (yes i have made sure the washers are in the right places) I am able to spin the countershaft freely in neutral and then shift through all the gears and everything seems to spin good. Then I install the kickstarter shaft and thrust washer. I test by turning the kickstart shaft clockwise to simulate the ratchet spring and again, everything spins properly through neutral and all gears. After I install the right side case half and kickstart ratchet spring and retainer i can turn the shaft in neutral but when i move the shift drum through each of the gears something is binding slightly. I can "get passed" it if i turn a little harder and then it turns maybe another full rotation or two and then binds again. Any advice of what to look for? I've already fully assembled the motor once and it ran great but when i went to shift to first the gears grinded pretty bad. I want to make sure i've got this thing right before putting all the way back together. :)

Thanks!

I've been through that. Pull the crankshaft out of the cases, gives you a better chance to see where the trans is locking up. If it failed like mine, you're going to find that one of the gears has a shape like a hair on the face of the tooth. Its enough to cause the trans to 'stall', but not enough to shut it down all together.

Pile that junk up in a corner. See if you can find a 'gently' used / bottom end, matching the kick shaft to the trans is important.

That's a good idea to install it without the crank. I'm actually going to do that and leave the kickstart shaft out as well to verify its not something with that. Then I will just have the tranny in the case.

Well. Taking the crank out didn't help much but after taking the kickstart shaft out i've eliminated it as a possibility of the problem. The gears still bind up. So what i did is i turned until i felt it start to bind and then left it in that position, removed the right case half, and then turned a little past where the bind was and i can see there is a mark on the largest gear of the countershaft and that gear has the hair line you were talking about. So ya, guess i'll start looking for a tranny or complete bottom end. :-\
