Hi,

Just got a 86 trx 70... tranny question..

Seems like the tranny does not always hold gear or shift positively? Whats an easy test to narrow down the problem? With the machine off, if I cycle through the gears the gear indicator will go N,1,2,3... won't go into 4 unless I roll the machine a little.. . Then back down is not always smooth.. might take 2 lever presses to downshift each gear..

Thanks

If the clutch adjustment doesn't help, pull off the RH engine cover and inspect. A somewhat common issue on these is a broken:

Arm, Shift Drum Stopper, 24430-GW8-710

These threads are about ATC 70 but the idea is the same:

good info:

I had a 70 that would not shift right. It was my fault - I put it back together wrong and did not get the internal clutch linkage parts aligned correctly and tore up:
Lever, Clutch 22811-040-020
Plate, Clutch Lifter 22830-041-000
Retainer, Clutch Ball 22860-046-000
Probably not your issue, though.

Thanks guys!

I did a clutch adjustment, and went for a quick run. She seemed to shift fine. See how it goes.

But I thought clutch issues would be more related to stalling, bucking, etc and not so much slipping out of gear or missing a shift?

Right, the motor oil is the tranny oil. If you look at the way the clutch and shifter arm works. When the shifter lever is moved the first thing it dose is open the clutch then it changes gears. So if the clutch is not adjusted right the timing from when the clutch opens and the tranny shifts is not right you get miss shifts and false neutrals.

When we raced the stock pit bikes we would shift from neutral into first but hold the shifter rev the motor then let go the shifter you would get a good holeshot just like you where dropping the clutch. And that's exactly what you where doing the tranny is in gear you are just holding the clutch open with the shifter lever.
