Hello, I am new to the forum and in the process of putting a 1973 QA50 back together that I acquired that was in pieces. I have the bike running, but it seems to not want to go into gear. You can move the shifter up and down and nothing. Then from time to time when you try to kickstart it, it will go into gear on its own and then randomly come back out of gear for no apparent reason. I have had the clutch cover off several times but for the life of me can't figure out what is wrong, the whole setup looks so simple with very few parts, but I can't figure out how it is suppose to work. Thanks for your help in advance.

I find it odd no one has run into this issue before because from what I have researched these bikes had shifting issues. Anybody?
The shifting issues you have read about and that is linked in TMAS's post is different than what you are experiencing. Early QA's had a transmission skip. They will shift into first and second gear but as you drive the bike in second pops out of second, it almost feels like a really bad momentary clutch slip. Honda did come out with a bulletin for this. It is hard from your description to diagnose your poblem. Being a basket case you have assmbled are you sure you have all of the parts? My guess is something may be missing.

Based on all the parts diagrams I have seen it all appears to be there. Anyone have real pics of one?

Just found the answer to my own question in the link below. To bad the pics of 3UP's are not there. Here is a pic of a QA frame & below is an explanation on what has to be done.

New top motor mounts need to be fabbed as does the right rear. The left rear can stay and by using it the chain lines up perfectly,as does a CRF sprocket cover.

How does the shifting arm inside the right case suppose to do anything (the piece that is held in with the clip)? I am having a hard time figure out how it actually changes gears. The arm going up to the clutch makes sense but the piece in the right case and then the fork that is behind the clutch on the shifting shaft just boggle me.

I got the thing together and it sort of shifts. Neutral appears to be up all the way and then I can get it to shift down into gear, but sometimes it will pop out. I just have it sitting up on a block right now when I put it in gear, when I climb on it and put it in gear it almost dies immediately and can't pull me. It is almost like the clutch isn't slipping at all because soon as you shift it into gear it grabs and tries to go. Any ideas on what I need to look at? I am definitely thinking I need to pull the clutch apart and see if maybe things are dry in there. I was thinking I oiled each disc when I put it all in but it has been a while since I have messed with it.
