Hello me and a friend are really interested in building 2 street legals 50s here in albany NY, and we have a bunch of questions.

1 Is this even possible?

2 Do we buy the XR50 or the CRF50 or does it not matter?

3 What year do we buy, iv heard some says 02 and before, some say they registered other years

4 What regulations does New York State require for a 49cc motorcycle to lealize it like lights, tires, blinkers, etc?

5 Where can I get the supermoto kit, iv seen the baja kit for 500, but does any one here have it cheaper?

6 I hear the stock stator does not produce enough power?

7 What do I do about the title? I have heard that the crf50s and xr50s say off road use only on the title, how do you get around it

8 how do i register it?

9 is it easier to buy one thats already done and registered out of state, and if so where can we buy them?

If you could help it out it would be great, thanks!

Hello me and a friend are really interested in building 2 street legals 50s here in albany NY, and we have a bunch of questions.

1 Is this even possible? Can't really answer this because I'm not sure about the way things are done in New York. I can start by saying you will more than likely need to find bikes/frames with 17 digit VIN numbers, matching titles or at least matching MSOs/Certificate of Origins, plus a complete Bill of Sale from seller, and then you will probably need to see your local Notary for verification of paperwork in order to transfer ownership. The seller may or may not need to be present as well. If you buy a bike new from Honda like I did you will save a lot of time and stress but you will have to spend more money.

2 Should not matter. Both have 17 digit VINs. They are virtually the same bike.

3 I've heard this scenario applies in California but from personal experience I know that it doesn't apply in Louisiana.

4 In Louisiana they wanted lights, high beam, tail light, brake light, mirror, horn, DOT approved tires, speedometer and odometer.

5 Cheapest I found one was $450 but you could always build your own if you wanted for probably half that price.

6 You need a wrapped stator. Available online for around $50-70, or again, you can make your own if you have a soldering gun and some copper wire.

7 In Louisiana we have a section/form specifically for converting your ORV title to MC title (after going through all the necessary upgrades and inspections). My cost was around $18 at the DMV.

8 Check with your local DMV. I asked my local OMV lady how to go about doing this. Be sure not to refer to it as a pocket bike or minibike when asking. Say it's a dirtbike or scooter. ;] Be kind and persistent. It goes a long way.

9 I guess anything is "easier" to buy if you have an unlimited budget, but if $500 for a lighting kit is too much for you then you might just want to give up now. Unless you get lucky I doubt you'll find many people selling road registered 50s for an affordable price. Especially 2 of them. Shipping is not going to be cheap either. Just my .02. Hope this helps. :]

Best bet is going on the DMV/OMV website and start reading up. Do some homework, print out some stuff. Then take a trip to a local title office or OMV and look for the nicest, least busiest person there then ask questions if you are unclear about anything. Remember that before it is all said and done that your bikes are going to probably have to be inspected by police first, then DMV, before you can get your papers done. I had to being mine to the State Troopers headquarters and have a cop inspect it and fill out the inspection form. This was probably the hardest part of the process because I had to convince him that it was safe enough to be on his streets in traffic. Luckily the guy was in a good mood and I had all my ducks in a row. ;]

Good luck!

It's not worth the hassle when pitster makes a bunch of street legal bikes:

x2 on Pitster Minis...

I have a 125 mini rover that I was able get a title, registration and inspection for- easy as pie. 1400.00 for the bike though- so if you cant swing that expense, you may look for an older titled CT70.

In Texas they are more common than 50's that are street legal or ready to title. Older hardtail frames with titles may also be a better route.

You make a valid point, but Pitster does not make crf50s. ;] (Not saying there is anything wrong with your idea, but he specifically asked about crf50s.) Now I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Pitsters, nor the people that ride them, but he might want to put genuine Honda crf50s on the street. I know I did.. And the hassle was well worth the little bit of time and effort it took to make it happen. Just my experience. :]
