Well, before I do all of this, because I may be over reacting, how about I get a vid of tomorrow of it idling for you? Because right before I did the 88 kit, the engine ran perfect, and right after ( as in right now ) it runs perfect, I just notice a little tick.

Hold up i will PM you, i dont want to ruin this guys thread, LoL

I think we've already done the equivalent damage as throwing a valve in an engine as to the off topic posting in this thread, LOL. Sorry man, didn't mean to piss in your thread..

Lot of hours/miles on this top end? It does look like you were running rich, but I'm unsure if it would cause the failure. I run two of these kits and have racked up quite a few miles on both of them. Have had 0 problems to date, knock on wood. But I ride pretty conservatively.

I got it used a few years back and only ran it on the street since then. I was running a VM26 with a 22.5 pilot and and a 155 main.

Aren't the SE cylinders nikasil lined? Sounds pricey to have re-sleeved.

The cylinder is nikasil and my nail catches on both gouges but they are small. There is also a lot of wear on the exhaust side skirt, is that normal for horizontal motors?

Was that a high comp dome top piston or the stock piston. I put the 54mm in my race head with metal head gasket. Only to find the dome piston was going up and very barely touching the valves. I took it back down and replaced the head gasket with another stock head gasket (because its thicker than the metal gasket). Fixed the problem and havent heard anything from it since then.It was making a small taping noise that got worse at higher revs (this is what made me wonder). Good thing i never rode it, i only cranked it to listen. But after the tare down, that is what i discovered. So glad I took it down and fixed it when I did.PS: Mine is 117cc, bigger crank and 54mm piston. In case u were wondering why I went 54mm instead 52mm, LoL

Ahhh man I feel your pain. I hate when I tear somthing down and find more icky things than I anticipated. Takegawa super head valves do the exact thing. Its just after running for so long they seem to crack/crumble, or if one good small chunk of sand or dirt gets in there it reeks havok. Its defeinitly funny to see that on any OEM stock valves say on a honda or kawi's will totally out last the Tak and Kitaco valves ten fold. Even the lifan BVH and E22 valves seem to last so much longer. Its a bummer that they don't last as long, I mean you pay atleast trible of what the stock OEM ones are. Heres a pic of a valve I just pulled out of a F5 twin spark head.

Sorry for the crummy cell phone pic its the only camera I had near to me and I'm way to lazy to go upstairs to get the good camera lol. Anyway I'm sure you get the idea, Plus I Thought it would make ya feel better since your not the only one that this has happend to. Just like stormin said the piston is toast. As for the cylinder you could try a decent hone. In my opinion to keep the rebuild cost down, I would steer clear getting your current cylinder re-sleeved as I believe you could source a brand new one at really good price say on Dratv. Just my o2. The head just as what Chad said is definitly salvageable. If for what ever reason you decide to sell it as is I call Dibs haha. In all seriousness I would start by cleaning up the combustion chamber with some brake clean and a fine wire brush attatched to any drill. Just dont mash the brush into the cumbustion chamber walls to prevent scratching them. After that is done Take another pic and post it up. It will help a ton to determine what else needs to be done. No doubt its going to cost a little bit of money to make it top notch again, but it will be well worth it. Hope this helps out some.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll clean up the cylinder tonight and see where to go from there.

if your nail catches i HIGHLY recommend you toss that one aside and get a new cylinder or get it replated. if you use it and the rings happen to seat it wont long before its going to eat the rings out of it again with the gouges. i know it sucks but trust me dont do the spend lil now pay more later theory like most do you will save yourself alot of headaches and loss of ride time. replating usually runs 150-200 bucks if you cant swing the replate at least go with the dratv cylinder. its not uncommon to see a lil exhaust scuffing in these horizontal motors but if there is alot she was wore the fock out a long time ago and you was just beating a dead horse.

Hey elitexsenate, didn't I see your avatar bike on a West Coast Choppers episode. jk. Thats some nasty rake!

Use Kitaco parts. The nik coating on the cylinder/piston has higher tolerances and not meant to be interchanged with non coated products.

Good call, I'm waiting to hear back from a vendor on a replacement cylinder

I think it's the angle, They are standard marzocchis and a billetware cradle frame.

Ah-ha! The Billetware frame is the culprit. They came from the factory with a worse rake than stock. About 5 degrees from where it should be, up to 7 for street. Replace or correct your frame and your bike will turn like a Porsche instead of a Peterbuilt. Seriously, it should be your next mod especially if you motard. Look in the crf70 section and you will see what I mean, if you don't already.
