Ok, So I'm still trying to educate myself on the Takegawa heads. I did a search and couldnt find my specific answer. Here we go...

I have a ZB50 Motor that is currently a Takegawa 108 stroker. This is the

head I have:

To build a Takegawa 124, I know I need the bigger cylinder, piston and rings, crank , and to bore the cases. But can I use this head, or do I need a different one? Sorry if thats a stupid question, but I'm still trying to learn and distinguish between the different Takegawa heads.

Any help greatly appreciated.. Thanks.

You'll use the same head. Your motor is not a 108cc motor. Takegawa makes a 51mm stroker crank and it's either a 106 (52mm bore) or 115cc (54mm bore).

You'll need:

a 54mm Takegawa or comparable Cylinder (69mm tall)

Takegawa stroker crank (54mm) or aftermarket equivalent

Takegawa 54mm Piston for the Old Superhead - Not for a +R

Takegawa 54mm gasket set

Longer case studs

Thanks for the info Dan. Is there a huge advantage in the +R head, in comparison to the old superhead I currently have?

It's my personal opinion that the Old Superhead did not hold up very well and I've seen a ton of these drop valves.

Ask yourself if it's going to be cost effective to take your existing motor up to 124cc's without mixing and matching brands of parts or going with all Takegawa. Price out a new 124 +R from a Takegawa vendor and compare this to what it would take to upgrade your used head to this displacement.

Think about what you want the motor for. Unless it's for competitive racing, don't sweat the small stuff and run what you brung.

I've been through a ton of different motor combinations, and if you want to go really fast, take a big bike or your vehicle.

I like riding my 88's and 108's the most.

agree with Z on the big motors 88s and 106cc is plenty of power if your riding dirt

i had a 124+R when they first come out and it was way too much for mini mx tracks

i now run a 106+R and its great for my track

He's going to run in a ZB50. A 106 Superhead is good for 65mph unless the rider is portly.

I'm a trim 175:D I've also heard that the piston kits for the top end that I have are becoming harder to source? Not sure how true this is. I am definatly taking your advice into consideration Dan. As much as I want a reliable plenty fast motor, I also want to buy some jewelry for the bike to. Decisions... Decisions..

If you are opting for the +R head ,there will be no problem in getting any size replacement piston

The older superhead , as dan mentioned had troubles with valves ,mine with valves and rockers! , the various pistons are discontinued and hard to find

The older superhead lasted me about 18 months before it crapped out ,the +R head (twinspark) i had for 3 years, was Awesome! ,i eventually sold my tak motor and bought a built honda nice motor

The +R head outlasted my use both on and off-road, i would undoubtably own one again (probably not the twinspark version though, due to added rebuild costs)

You are going to have more than one problem. (Yea Terry would of know the answer to this) First YES it is getting VERY difficut to find the parts nd piston fot that old head you have. Second the piston for a +R head the decking is taller than on the older piston. So all the new cranks have a shorter rod on them to match the NEW +R piston. When you purchase a crank and put that old piston on it the piston is going to sit down in the cylinder. Some guys make a +R piston fit the older head with a little grinding but a new crank and the old piston dont match up. Takegawa will never tell ya that but I had an head like you have now. It was a 115 engine. I purchased a NEW crank and a 54mm piston for that OLD style head put it together and the piston was in the cylinder 2mm. I ended up buying a +R piston and head to make it work. When I got the +R piston I meassured them and it is 2mm taller than the Old style piston. So good luck there are different rods you could use on a 54mm crank to get the piston back to the top of the cylinder but only Terry at Firepowerminis would know which rods and be able to do it. Let me know how it turns out. They changed to rod length on the 54mm crank since the +R piston is taller. Now they left the 50mm cranks alone but thats because they dont offer a 115 kit for the +R head. So they didnt change the rod on it but a NEW crank and the OLD style piston will leave the piston in the cylinder and you cant mill 2mm off the cylinder it would screw up the cam timeing and you could never get the cam chain tight...

the 124 pistons are easy to get. It's the 88cc Superhead pistons that are going the way of the dodo bird.

cmsnl.com or mini mob in Canada can order them up.

Drained - If you decide to go this route, drop me a note offline and I will give you the part numbers so you will receive the correct piston for your application.

Z I purchased my piston for my OLD style superhead from Mike at MiniMob.. It was the correct piston its just the rod legth on the cranks has changed. The decking of the Old style head piston is 2mm lower than the +R piston. And since they BOTH use the same crank and cylinder one of the pistons has to be off. It ends up being the one for the older head. If they make one with the same deck height as the +R piston but domed for the OLD head me and Mike missed it.. I wish there was. Just make sure you get the cylinder and crank first and wherever you order the piston make sure you can return it "IF" it dosent fit.. Thats what I found anyway. If 2 pistons share the same crank and cylinder and one is 2mm taller than the other one is going to be to long or to short and it was the OLD style head piston that was to short, but maybe there is a different piston out there..
