Any of you wrenches out there have any tips or tricks of the trade for removing the two needle bearings from the engine case halves? Is it a matter of just prying them out with a screwdriver, or does it require the use of a torch?

Also, does anyone know what size they are so I can order some new ones?

Thanks for that. I was looking at those, but wasn't sure if they were the right size or not.

Guess I'll hit up Firepower to see if he can remove them while he bores out my cases.

He can;) I've plugged them with grease before, too, to avoid pulling them. Never had an issue. If they're going in the glass-bead cabinet, i prefer to pull them. Clumps of grease in my clean white blast media remind me too much of BP...

The cases I'm getting are used, so it's not a matter of the bearings getting swarf in them during the bore process. Since I don't know the history of the motor, all old bearings must go! I only want to have to build this motor once.

when ive read about cleaning cases on Thesamba.com (air cooled vw site) glass bead or any kind of sand blasting is highly not recomended! not im not trying to tell you how to do your job its just something ive read by some highly rated engine builders and they say that its very risky to use glass or sand cos if just one little bit get left in a passage way or crevis it will kill a motor

everyone recomends chemical dipping the cases or hot tanking them!!!

Flogging a dead horse here...

Bought a set of the needle bearings above. Now I'm wondering which way they get installed. Do the numbers on the bearings face out or in (so that you can't see them when installed)? My guess is out, but need to confirm. Anyone?

I don't honestly think it matters, the bearing cages are the same on both sides, no?

Don't forget to put the cases under a heat lamp for a few minutes, and the bearings in the freezer for a few, too. Makes installation much easier.

Actually they're just a little bit different. But you're probably right. It won't matter much how they're oriented. I was just wondering how Honda installs them.

Thanks for the tip. I'm sticking them in the freezer overnight.

Get 'em good & cold. Looks like you might get to use them tomorrow:)
