Well I have been asking a couple of questions here and there, and figured I would post up a build thread for what I'm doing. It's the 91' Z50r that I had as my first bike when I was 4 years old, so it has sentimental value as well. I have been debating the paint scheme for a couple of days now and have come up with

Red

-Frame/Swingarm

-Bottom half of forks

-Wheels

-1/3 of the tank, I will post a picture of what I'm thinking because I can't explain it easily

-Rear shock springs if I can get them apart, and get the paint to stay

Black

-Lip of the wheels

-Top half of forks

-Handle Bars

-1/3 the tank

-Sprocket

-Any motor parts I can paint (using High Temp)

-Exhaust in High Temp as well

White

-Plastics (I dont want to paint them then have them chip and be ugly)

-1/3 the tank

Number plates

-I have a sick idea that will be my surprise when I'm finished

Well here are some pictures I took after I washed everything to get the dirt, grease and oil off. I'm going to be working on the rust over the next couple of days, I started 1 side of a rim today, and it went...well, it's just long and tedious work.

The chain is rusted to ****, and will most likely just be replaced with a new sprocket.

There is a little bit of rust inside the tank (No pictures of it because I couldn't see it in the camera) so is there anything I can do?

Now the right side case cover has some cracking, and I'm missing the head manifold and a few other odds and ends that got lost in the move. (We took it apart to fix it a long time ago) so I've just decided to get the piranha 90 motor for now and rebuild the honda motor as time goes on.

Now I need to finish sanding everything down, then start priming. I'm going to be posting pictures of the progression tomorrow. I finished removing rust and paint from one wheel, and started the other before my drill ram out of batteries. I also got the forks taken apart which was MESSY AS ****. I'm not sure if there is supposed to be that much grease in there, but it was loaded. So tomorrow I will prolly prime the forks since I can just sand them being that they aren't really rusty.

Well I picked up all the paint I should need. It was 34 dollars exactly at Menards lol. Having it all lined up on a dresser kind of looks like a work of art. I got the number plate off of the plastics, and it only took a tedious hour and a half, and carb cleaner did a nice job getting the left over sticky crap off. I'm heading over to my girlfriend's house right now to use her garage to work on sanding and de-rusting the frame, forks, tank, and bars. Hopefully I will have time to get a coat of primer on them all. And I'm pretty sure I will be able to get the color on the rims so I can start seeing what it will look like.

Here is the paint line up

Image

-Rust reformer for the areas I can't sand clean

-Filler primer because there was some pitting, and I didn't sand everything to the metal

-Rubberized undercoating for the lip of the rims, and maybe the inside of the plastics. Well see how well it sticks in a hidden area

-Gloss enamel in red, black, white, and non-yellowing crystal clear

-Engine enamel paint for the motor/exhaust but it's 500 degree in the picture, I will prolly use 2000 degree to be safe

Heres my pimp ass number plate from when I had the bike when I was 4 years old. I think I might keep it aside and buy a new one to remember the old look.

Image

Here are the plastics with the number plate off. They are a little scratched up, but I am going to figure out something to do so I don't have to paint them.

Image

I am going to paint the fork tubes on the side of the tape towards my hand black. There is a little surface rusting I want to take care of, and I think it might look good. Hopefully I never use that much suspension, but I doubt I will.

Image

One side of the tank with the decal, one without. The dam thing was hard hard as hell to get off and I can't get the adhesive to come off with anything I have at my house so I might have to go out and buy something.

Here are the forks taped off, showing what I have to work with. Rust sucks

Well under way- TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!

It will take a bunch of prep work and patience to get a quality look with the paint.

Time to wetsand...and wetsand...and wetsand.

and then tack and then wetsand...did I mention tack and sand?

I am the proud owner a 1991 Z50R too. :) Cool thread.. How is the inside of the tank?

Inside of the tank is pretty good actually. Less then the size of a thumbprint of rust at the gas valve. I made some more progress today on alot of parts. I got the first layer of primer on the forks and wheels. A layer of rust reformer on the frame because there are a couple of areas that I could not get to the rust to remove it. So tomorrow I will do the filler primer coat. One side of the wheels was done drying so I taped off the lip and did the rubberized spray. I looks great, and turned out better then I thought. Pictures will come when I get them downloaded from the camera

Rust reformer on the bars, it will be primed tomorrow

Rust reformer and primer on forks. The crease of the tubes had some rust that I couldn't get to with anything

Rim with primer that was dried

Spraying the rust reformer on the frame

Taping off the wheel so that I can spray the rubberized coating on the lip of it

Spraying the rubber coating on the lip

After taking off the tape. The rim is just primered and will be red like planned, I just wanted the rubber down first incase tapping off the lip didn't work correctly. So if it messed up I wouldn't have to repaint color, now it would just be primer and thats simple. I'm just going to tape off the rubber and have the red overlap just a hair.

Here's everything I worked on today, sitting waiting for it to dry enough to move

Well I need to do another coat of rubberization on the wheel lips because the **** SHRINKS DOWN, and it look like I might have bumped it in a couple of spots, so retaping should be fun...not. Anyway here is a picture of it now, it's a little blurry but you can still see the difference from previous pictures.

Image

I'm not sure if this was needed, but where the seat rubbed the frame, it rubbed through the paint and cause it to rust. So looking around the room I found some duct tape, and came up with yet another use for it. I laid it down on the bottom of the seat where it rests on the frame. It has almost rubber like characteristics so it should protect it pretty well.

Image

I put my MNSBR decal on there, and had some SLXI stickers, and reflective decals from the kick off ride so I decided to rep the best dealership around, and the guy that puts on the best event of the year, while adding some reflectivity for safety since I plan on trying to get a title for this thing so that I can ride it on the street. (Don't might the huge knife, I was using it to cut ****)

Image

Now with flash to see reflectivity

Image

And with the seat sitting on top to help the imagination a little more. If only the bike was done so I could see the whole picture.

hmm, maybe I'll put some duct tape on there as well since it's hidden, so you'll never see it, and protect the metal. I imagine I won't be able to take the tape off afterwards without ripping the paint off though.

Update - I starting painting the color on the forks and the top of the triple, and it's turning out pretty good. I wasn't sure if the red was going to be dark enough for me, but it looks pretty good. It was raining outside so I painted it in a covered area, and have it sitting in my bathroom with the fan on so it can dry without getting wet, and so it doesn't smell up the house.

Image

I want to start the tank, but I'm not sure how it's going to be painted yet. I need to see how the rest of the bike look witht he white plastics to see how much white I need to put on the tank to make it all flow together. So stay tuned because there is more updates to come.

Well I got the frame, brake drums, and rear fender support primed. I tried to put clear on the fork tube bottoms but the wrinkled to ****... I called rustoleum and asked them wtf was up, and they told me to wait atleast 48 hours before clearing. The can only says 24 so they should change that ****. Because now I have to strip all the paint off, and start all over again. So before I clear everything I'm going to wait atleast 3 days. So most likely I will paint everything with color, wait 3-5 days depending upon how patient I am feeling, and clear everything at the same time.

I also own a '91 z50 and just finished up a build exactly like what you are doing. I took my time and did a little bit here and there. Took me about 6 months to finish but th end result was worth taking the extra time. Great bikes!!!

Looks good so far.

Did you use spray paint as well? I'm curious to know how well the paint will hold up? It will have a couple of coats of clear on it to make it is a little more durable, but I wana know what other peoples experiences are.
