You should do this frequently. Everytime you ride for the most part.

1. close the choke so nothing gets in the engine.

2. remove the air filter. If you have a stock airbox, take that off and remove the air filter from it.

3. Spray with cleaner and let sit 15 min

4. Rinse with cool water

5. Let dry thoroughly

6. Oil with air filter oil, I like Bel Ray, but you can use whatever you want

It is best if you have 2, so you can wash one, let dry, and oil the one you washed and dried last time.

Thoroughly.

I add a little at a time until the color is even. That is why I like Bel Ray. When used with a red Uni you get a purple color. Too much won't really hurt, It will just smoke when you start it until the extra is gone.

Mkae sure you let the filter sit overnight after you oil it, I read an article about this and most people just oil it an dthen ride it. They highly highly reccomend letting it sit overnight after oiling.

okay, foam filters.

Makesure they have no water on them.

clean them with regular gas.

ring them out

oil it so all the oil is even

put it on and ride.

thats how i do it and ive been running the same filter for 2 years

i have a bunch of K&N air filter oil in the aeresol can, will it work with a dual foam air filter even though its meant for a paper filter?

No it is different stuff

uhh, nothing. it would run...

I know it will run. But what would be the result of running the K&N air filter oil made for the gauze type filters on a stock Foam Filter???

shmalphy seems to disagree stating they are different...

It will run with the K&N Paper filter oil, it is just not the ideal product.

The difference is viscosity, the holes are larger in the foam, so the oil is thicker and tackier to pick up the dust.

The function of a foam filter is not to filter the dirt, it is to hold the oil, and the oil picks up the dirt. Then you can rinse it and reuse it, because it doesnt hold onto anything.

Paper filters are for the fine dust and grime of street use, and would become clogged easily if used off road. Foam filters are designed for larger debris, and mud.

I don't recomend using gas for anything other than in the tank, it is toxic to you and the environment, and dangerous. If someone followed monaghan's advice while smoking it would be really bad. Just buy the same brand oil and cleaner, they are made to work together.

shmalphy, It isnt harming the envirnment anymore than the fluids you use, because you reuse it filtering the dirt out of the fuel everytime. And when your rinsing your filter in a sink your rinsing chemicals down the sink.

They both work but i learned the fuel trick from a mx mechanic.

And smoke isnt hot enough to start a fire with fuel anyway :p

I am not trying to debate wether or not gas works, I agree it probably does. I said that I would not reccomend using gas, as it is a "hack" method.

But smoking will cause gas fumes to combust.

While an experienced mechanic would know how to safely use gas, most of the people who would read a thread titled "How to clean your air filter" are not very experienced, and might make a rookie mistake like smoking a cigarette while using gas to clean a foam filter, or leaving the gas soaked rag in a closed room, or getting some on their clothes. A lot can go wrong with gas. It happens all the time. Here is a link to facts about gas safety

Also while some cleaners are bad for the environment, some new ones are not. No Toil just came out with one that is "green"

No Toil Biodegradable Filter Oil
