Skis at Goodwill for $4, some flat stock steel for $6, a welder, one afternoon and some boredom and this is what we came up with. Unfortunately we're unable to finish tonight because the hardware stores are all closed, but the only thing we really have left to get is some sort of hollow steel tube that the axle bolt JUST fits through so we can weld it between the top of the triangular braces to 1.) make them more secure and 2.) make it so we can actually tighten it down and it doesn't just swing on the axle bolt.

After we get that sorted out we're going to clean up the welds on the steel bits and powder coat them black... then the whole assembly will just unbolt like the front wheel does and be swappable within minutes. We also plan on getting a SUPER knobby back tire and studding it out.

We're not sure how well this will actually work in the snow, but it was fun to make.

maybe if you put some little prongs on the bracket that will go around the fork legs, like how frams have a steering stop

That's kinda what we were thinking. We might have to take on some supports that hold them in place... we were thinking maybe a couple ears that bolt where the stock brake cable bolts or something just to keep them from spinning. We mocked up having a solid piece between the two tops of each triangle (which we will get and weld in to place as soon as we can find something that'll work) and tightening down the nut/bolt combo SHOULD be enough to keep it in place as long as it doesn't hit anything when it leaves the ground.

I think we're going to end up figuring out a way to brace it better anyway though.

It will mount solid with the forks. We'll still have the fork suspension, but nothing else. We found some crazy setups on purpose built snow bikes online that have a separate strut and spring just for the ski assembly, but we're not that good at fabbing stuff up and the amount of tools we have is extremely limited, so this will work to bomb around the yard with. Should be fun. :)

I'll definitely get some more pics and vids up as we progress.

the more I look @ it that thing looks so hazardous w/o a way to keep it in place. if it goes backwards it will do some good damage on the motor.

We'll figure something out. Obviously if it's loose we aren't going to use it like this. We'll find a way to make it work. Flat stock steel is SO cheap and we've got access to enough tools to figure out a way to make it work.

I should say that we're not going to put any kids on this. My wife bought this for me as something to play on and I'm 27. My brother (his garage is where we're working on this) is 25 and he's probably the only other one that will ride it. We're both idiots sometimes, but we're not suicidal. :p

He rides a 2009 R1 (in the background, the Ninja 250 is his fiance's) and I ride a 2007 FJR1300, so we take safety when riding pretty seriously... probably not as much with this little 50 banging around the yard, but it was a present from the wife, so I definitely don't want to wreck it (or myself).
