HotRods is the way to go. Talk to a few guuys around us with the KX100. They eat cranks like the KTMs do

You need to have the crank balanced, its the same crank they use in the 85's. The KX 100 piston assembly weighs more than the 85 piston which throws the crank out of balance because of the weight difference. Same thing applies if you are using a Hot Rod crank.

UPDATE: Well... I've been a little busy lately (also broke)-- so my project has been sitting in pieces. Also-- I've been rounding up a bunch of parts that will be on the bike when it comes together in a week or two.

Here's what I've gathered so far. I grabbed up a brand new '09 bottom end and electrical system, and I bolted the '05 100 top end right up to it. I got new black fork guards, rear mud flap, generator cover, and radiator louvers off Ebay. A new '09 take off 85 (shorter) swinger and linkage. A new (white) set of UFO plastics which include new style fenders. An awesome set of graphics are on the way along with a raw looking Pro Circuit "Factory" pipe and silencer. It already has VForce reeds. A set of Pro Taper bars, and some misc. crap like a new chain and sprockets, some brake pads, a Pivot Works roller bearing set for the top shock mount, UNI air filter, grips... etc.

This week I'll have the suspension out getting set up for my 150 lb. weight, and I'm planning on getting the frame bead blasted, then clear coated with some kind of durable "Bulldog" clear primer and paint. After that-- I wanted to get some black rims, but I'll wait until the bike needs tires (and I have more cash) to do that. I'll post pics and a ride report when I git 'er done. If it turns out as good as my 65 did-- then I'm in for some more epic rides.

The pic I have posted is just a pic of the graphics I've got coming. Bear in mind that I'm using a different style of fenders than these, and the green plastics that are on this bike, will be white on mine. Lemme know what you think.. --L*64

OK-- Well, I went to work on the suspension. According to the Race Tech suspension chart, a KX100 is set up for a 130 lb. rider. I weigh 150. So-- I talked to the suspension people who put my Fox Shock together on my 65. They wanted $550 + shipping to work with this suspension. So I took it to a local guy who charged me $385, + $90 for the OEM seals and bushings to pull the forks and shock apart-- and install the heavier springs, and put in the new parts and oil for me.

Now-- I'm wondering if I'd have been better off spending the extra $75 + shipping to have the valving changed up while it was apart. Any input from anybody? Or will I be OK with the stock valving going up two spring rates for 20 extra lbs. of rider weight?

Next week, I'll be sending the frame out-- then I'll reassemble the whole thing. --L*64

Funny you should ask Justin. Aside from the radiator shrouds, back # plates, and the FMF pipe-- this project is about finished. I was having a problem getting the graphics to adhere, so I sent the plastics to Enjoy MFG to have a set of Element Graphics applied for me to the shrouds. I'd highly recommend Enjoy if you're in the market for some graphics that you don't see just everywhere. They seem to stand behind their product too.

I'm planning on riding it Saturday night at an indoor ride night (I'm in Ohio, so it's cold here now). I'll have some pics up of the finished bike next week, along with the mods that I did to it.

As far as the suspension goes, I had both the shock and the forks taken apart with new bushings and seals in the forks. Both have new oil, and are resprung for my weight. I was a little worried because the valving is still stock, but now that I have the components back on the bike, and the sag set-- it feels pretty good so far. I only went up about 20 lbs on the spring rate though.

It's coming out really nice. Y'all will be impressed with it I bet. I've taken great care in the reassembly, and used Loctite on critical parts. Stay tuned. --L*64

OK-- here are some preliminary pics. It's done save for the stock bars, the FMF pipe, the Works Connection skid plate will be here Monday, and the cool Enjoy MFG Element Graphics on white shrouds, and the black # plates will be back here soon. I'm going to ride it tonight at an indoor spot for the first time with some crap bodywork I have laying around. I'll get you guys some more pics when the bodywork comes in, and a list of all the mods. I'll get a pipe and bars whn I get the cash. These will work for now. Lemme know what you think. I love the restyled fenders myself, a big improvement on the looks of the bike. I wish somebody would do something with the # plates now. --L*64

Here's a pic of what I got. Aside from the # plates and shrouds. The KX is basically finished. It went on its' maiden voyage tonight with some random body panels on it. The bike handles really well, and has pretty decent low/mid power. I'd say that it has got to be about as fast as a 150R (I had one), with slightly less bottom to mid, and about the same on the top.

Here are the mods that went into this project. It started as a run of the mill $1000 2005 KX100. Mods:

*New take off '09 KX85 bottom end and electrical system. I bolted the 2005 KX100 cylinder right up.

*14/17 inch KX85 wheels that were left over from a KLX140 project.

*New take off '09 KX85 swingarm and linkage.

*Black radiator louvres, rear mudflap, and rear caliper guard were '09 takeoff parts.

*Uni air filter.

*Bike already had V-Force reeds, and FMF pipe.

*New chain and sprockets.

*Works Connection skid plate on the way.

*White and black UFO plastics with Enjoy MFG. Element graphics.

*A set of fork springs and rear shock spring. The suspension components were set to my weight.

Hope y'll like it! --L*64

So your building an 85, the 100 and the 85 pretty much share everything, save yourself some time and put an 85 motor and swingarm in it and your done, Its really the only difference in the two, other than the cyl and head and piston, the swing arm is slightly longer. we raced them for many years, def liked the kx 85 motor better they don't go flat like the 100 does on top.

More info for ya, Hot rods is not the way to go, switch to prox, the hot rods use a narrower big end bearing and thicker thrust washers, as prox uses a wider crank bearing and thinner thrust washers, the kx 85 and 100 uses a shorter stroke then most of the other brands and tends to hit higher rpms quicker, we used to go through cranks alot more than our hondas, the prox outlasted the hot rod 2 to 1, always ran our oils at 32 to 1 Bikes were were always in great shape, but don't take my suggestion live and learn, is the best way.

check the distance between the gas tank and steering neck, you will see the 100 frame is longer. So, topend, swingarm, wheels and frame are different.

Art... Yeah, you're actually right, I could have just thrown a top end on an 85 and called it a day. The reason I got a 100 was because it had a new cylinder, V-Force reeds, it wasn't in bad shape, and it was really cheap. A cylinder would have to be $300-$400, and I got the bike for $1000. I sold the bigger wheels, longer swinger, and linkage for $300, bringing the cost down to $700. I got all new take off stuff then from Ebay. By the time everything is said and done, I'll have about $3000 in to it with once I get a pipe. It has new shrouds and plates too-- but they aren't here yet. If I got a new, or nearly new KX85, and had the suspension set up for my weight, got reeds, a 100 top end, and a pipe/silencer, and new plastic-- I'd have spent about $500 more than what I did on this bike, assuming that I got the '09 for around $2000. I could have got a nice 150R for $3000, but then I'd get beat up with maintaining the 4 stroke motor. I can't work on it myself. Oh... and I have a new '09 motor in the bike, I'm not using the '05 motor with the Hot Rods crank. If somebody wants it, send me a PM.

Matified-- That's pretty interesting, I didn't notice that the frames were different. I'll have to look into that. How much longer is the 100 frame at the neck?

Walsh- I already have an FMF on it. I was planning on getting a Pro Circuit someday when I have the cash sitting around, This pipe is fine for now. I'm already on my CRF150F racer project. Thanks for the offer though. --L*64

Yea for got about that, but the design was for the bigger rider, the forks and clamps are identical, Both tires went up in size, tires were not the reason. But siting and riding with the exception of the taller seat height and wheel diameter not alot of difference. Guess the bad thing around here is all pit bikes at least in the local series have to be 4 stroke, and supposedly no down tube frames. They can't seem to make up there minds on the rules though.
