The Suzuki RP68 engine: one wild motor - Racerplanet Network Forums

I found some pictures online of one of the niftier and rare engines you may never have seen. This is a 1968 Suzuki 50cc Grand Prix Roadracer, the RP68, a 3-cylinder 50cc bike. They changed the rules, restricting the 50cc class to 1 cylinder, before it could race. (There were 5 cyl 125's and the like as well before the rule change.) As a result, Honda and Suzuki pulled out of factory GP racing in these small displacement classes. I don't know how much power the RP68 made, but the RK67, a 2-cylinder engine, put out 17.5 hp at 17,300 RPM through a 14-speed gearbox (the powerband was a bit narrow).

If I'm not mistaken the worlds fastest 50 was set in the late 60's and I don't think anyone even came close to beating it until the past few years. It was a supercharged 49cc suzuki with a 17 speed tranny? Anyone got links I would like to read a little about these bikes again, they are interesting.

build a wild two stroke 50 with a cvt clutch and an aero kit and chase the records down

Suzuki RP 68

Engine type: Water-cooled 50 cc triple cylinder 2-stroke. 19 hp/ 20,000 rpm (380 bhp per liter), 170 kph.

Transmission: 14 speeds

Geez, with these specs, it's almost as if engineering and ingenuity has taken a nosedive since the 1960s.

It's all relative, I have beat that record many times. I weigh 235lbs, so if you factor in the weight, the fact I live south of the equator, and then deduct the gravitational vortex/divide by the wind chill factor, multiply it by .oo567 (for the additional drag caused by my overall size), and divide by 22.2 (Einstein's formula for weight /mass/speed of two moving objects), then you will find that 160mph for him, would be 67 mph.

I can't believe nobody else thought to take these factors into consideration, damn MTV has sucked your brains out!

Yea, imagine a 25mm bore / 25mm stroke, 4 cylinder, 2 stroke 49cc engine with cv tranny. You could built it to be less than half the size of the 60s 14 speed race bike engines. Obviously bump start with no clutch at all. I wish I was a machinest so I could design a bike like this. You would need to figure out some sort of modern cooling. radiators are so 1960's.

dicktony: I am pretty sure you would be north of the equator?!? LOL.

As north is generally considered to be up and south to be down, it could be that dicktony figured out that what we consider south is actually up and north is actually down and he may have meant he is below the equator.

Damn! I spent several hours reviewing my work, after some exhaustive research and several phone calls to Harvard... It appears I do in fact live north of the equator. I was actually facing the equator when I came to the conclusion I lived North of it, when infact I should have had my back to it. My calculations were way off, apparently I have not beat any records.

Guess I'm just a big dude going 70mph .

Thank you for correcting me, and for getting me kicked out of MENSA (apparently there is MENSA minibike riders on the forum, because I got a letter today telling me I am am no longer gifted/welcome due to my faulty "equator positioning skills."

I hope you are happy

;) Put your computer on a treadmill and it might help with the excess weight. You might also set a record for most time on a treadmill.

I said big not fat. I'm 6"3" and you wouldn't dare say that to me in person.

Unfortunately it's hard to be intimidating on a forum : )

PS- I do own a treadmill, it's where I pile all my boxes of mini parts....

they have arrived in the usa!

"Hello friends of the monkey scene,

we are Michael and Susan from TJR Motorsport / Germany. At the time our good friend IVO KASTAN and his wife Vierka are for a speed race with a special honda monkey and our engine in Bonneville Salt flats / Colorado. Here some original words about their arrival:

Dear Susan and Michael,

best regards from USA - Bonneville salt flats. We are here first day - we arrived from Denver / Colorado. Today 29.8.2009 was an administrativ check and technical checks. We have problem only with helmet, because here in USA they have other certificate for helmets, than in Europe, but it is Ok. Also we had a problem with rubber tube from fuel tank to carbs. It must be from fire resistant material, but now is all OK. We are in category MPS UG - modified partial streemliner unlimited gasoline. The bike and the engine have great success. Best Regards from Bonneville Vierka and Ivo

P.S. you can find some pictures about IVO Kastan and the bike at our website and soon about the arrial!

Best regards from Germany from Michael and Susan! "

Hello Dax Monkey and Friends,

New info by Ivo Kastan and Vierka: Race Day 1

Dear Susan and Michael,

Today was the 1st on 30/08/2009 Day of race speed. Five days ago it rained and the test section was 5 cm under water. The test track is very, very soft, but the race has started anyway. Ivo had to wait 4 hours in the hot sun of the salt lake. It was very windy. The race will start after a mile, flying start. Ivo's speeds today were, unfortunately, only 80 miles. Everyone told us, however, that this speed is incredible for these conditions and this bike. But that is not satisfactory today! Tomorrow we will try to be faster. Our border is 100 miles! We will try to change the gear and Ivo is only up to 3 Gang go, because the track is very, very soft.

Ivo start in the category of 175 MPS UG - because there is no record!

Liebe Grüße, and Ivo Vierka

P.S. New pictures on our website!

Today, 2/9/2009, we had to overcome a last resort, for us the magic, the limit of 100 million Tomorrow we are racing announced for RWB category - which is a mixture of all colors and the record is not recorded.

Just at seven o'clock in the morning, we stood in a queue for a motorcycle called prestage-there subdivided into their motorcycles categories and pathways. About nine-thirty we finally got a number, because some of us had a motorcycle accident before the race and thus delayed.
Dráha je už pořádně rozrýpaná.
The track is already pretty rozrýpaná.
Long international career today first day of riding the fastest streemlinery, it is the first day when conditions are good, so that these machines go to the track.
We look at one of the fastest motorcycles in the world called BUB7, its speed record is 350.884 miles / h and it was half a mile overcome.
V přepočtu na kilometry 561,4 km.
When adjusted for miles 561.4 kilometers.
Some of these machines are not on the front bike tire, but only steel wheel.

After a long wait, finally gets to Ivo, all of them shout and applaud him, as I'm here for anyone else registering.
Chvilka napětí a špatně rozumím údajům z vysílačky, nevíme kolik Ivo jel.
Moment of tension and ill-understood data from the transmitter, we do not know how Ivo rode.
Za chvíli přiběhne jeden chlapík a volá 97,098.
After a while one guy came running and calling 97.098.
Hranici sto mil ani včerejší rekord jsme nepřekonali.
Border one hundred miles, or we have not overcome a record yesterday.
Dlouze přemýšlíme, jestli má cenu ještě zkusit jednu opravnou jízdu, ale při pohledu na stometrovou frontu motocyklů, teplotu 42 stupňů a vzhledem k okolnostem, že začíná foukat vítr a už vlastně zde ani nemáme jak motocykl upravit, aby jel rychleji jedeme do uzavřeného parkoviště a necháme rozebrat motor na přeměření obsahu, aby mohl být oficielně uznán rekord 97,45 mil/h v přepočtu 155,97 km/h .
Long wonder if is worth one more try corrective ride, but looking at the hundred-meter front of motorcycles, temperature 42 degrees, and given the circumstances, the wind begins to blow and we really are or how we adjust the bike to go faster we go into a closed parking lot let the engine break down the re-measurement of content in order to be officially recognized record of 97.45 miles / h conversion of 155.97 km / h.
We were also afraid that something will happen with the engine, this will not gauge the content and not acknowledge our record no.

Cylinder is fine and all our congratulations to oficielnímu record for one mile with flying start. Although Ivo limit of one hundred miles driving crossed, unable to sustain the whole of one mile.
It's a pity, but at least we have a challenge in other years.

I tak máme nejrychlejší Monkey na světě.
Even so, we have the fastest Monkey in the world.

Came to us and several people who greeted us in broken Czech, some of them were in CR only, others are wives, Czech or Czech ancestors.

Contest ended for us, the motorcycle is ready for the return transport.
Uložíme ho do bedny a odevzdáme společnosti Schenker v Salt Lake City.
Store it in boxes and surrender of Schenker in Salt Lake City.
Poté se vydáme na cestu do Denveru.
