Hello I just installed aYX 160 engine in my thumpstar. It seems to run great except it wont idle and the jetting seems off no matter where I jet it to. The carb that came with it is a 28mm flatslide mikuni I live at sealevel in Pennsylvania. Anyone know about the idle (almost acts like a vacuum leak) or a good place to start with jetting? Is there a better carb intake combo then what I have?

Thanks in advance for any info,

Brian

thats a very good carb

try checking a few other things first

adjust your valves

see if you not getting an exhaust or intake leak

then do a plug read

hows it look ?

go with a 26mm round slide carb..alot easier to tune.

that may be true , but tm28 is def a good carb and will out perform a vm26

pulled plug a few times and it looks lean , when i jet richer it runs worse. I checked for a vacuum leak with carb cleaner and couldnt find one. The intake was very poorly matched.Shoul I be useing the spacer and the rubber boot?

Got the jetting with the flatslide pretty close. 80 degrees 1000ft above sea level ended up with a 170 main, 22 pilot ,clip at top, A/s 2 turns out. Still cant get a decent idle though but the bike hauls! Im going to try a little more jetting on the pilot to see if I can get a decent idle.

Ok I give . I tried everything to get it to idle. Ive tried every jet combo possible, timing, vacuum leaks,vm26 carb off of friends bike, valve lash, you name it. Anyone have any more ideas as to why it wont idle? Revs high till you either turn idle screw(even an 1/8 of turn will kill it totally) or snap throttle (dies).

I appreciate any ideas.
