just put the s 35d comp cam in and when i turn the motor over the valves are hitting each other. i have the valves set at .008. doesnt seem like it has anything to do with the comp release, just too much duration or overlap. i thought this was a common setup. anybody else have this problem?

Hey Don,

I'm not an idiot when comes to building motors or anything that has to do with building a motocross bike. That cam he is talkin about is the same cam you sold me. You might run them all the time but you definately don't run cams that make your intake valves slap the top of the piston.

I have read guys having to trim the valves abit to get them to clear each other. I would also set the lash a bit tighter..say .003. It may help in the way they time the overlap. This is when Dood or hack would set you straight.

You were atleast smart enough to check this before you mounted it.

if everything is installed right, correct part for your application, and clearances set correctly you wont have that problem...i had a s35 in my 195v2 and a s35 decomp in my 180v2...no problems...d comp made starting soo easy. Also .008 is too loose, and stay off limiter and your valves shouldnt hit your piston.

P.S- your grammar sucks

He never said they hit the piston...he said they were hitting each other on overlap....just for clarification.

yea, the motor is still on the bench and i havent torqued the head down yet. i saw he mention that when he installed the cam in his bike he had piston to valve clearence so i was checking that first.i was rotating the motor over by hand to check it and i could feel it hit a notchy spot. when you look in the exhaust port i can see the valves hitting each other. i was going to set the valves at .003 tomorow and rotate it again to see whats up. thats the only thing left to do.

i didnt know the rockers were different. i had them side by side and they looked the same. you would think they would be marked if they are different. going to double check everything tomorow, hopefully this all works out. thanks for the help guys.

what piston are you running? i have the tb 165 with 55mm stroker crank, i just got from the shop and did everything 5 more times, set valves at .003 and zero, still valves are hitting. they arent hitting the piston just each other. i took the head off and rotated the camshaft and they just clear when the head is off. when i put the head back on they hit. wtf.

ok i just want to say thanks for everyones help, turned out the piston was hitting the intake valve, it was hanging it up enough to make the 2 valves hit each other. took it back apart and machined a deeper pocket in the piston. now it finally clears. i think the problem is in the diffrences in the maching and mass production of the trail bike parts. its weird how some people say they used the same setup but 2 of us just had the same problem. oh well now i need to find out who has a tak cable clutch in stock so i can finish this motor. i got a little more time now with 13" of snow on the ground today:mad:
