ok so i need some help to figure out what went wrong and how to fix my motor. it has an 88 kit. i was riding not to hard when it suddenly bogged down and lost all spark. the timing is off so i am thinking that maybe it is a flywheel key but i am not sure. so anyone with a suggestion or potential fix let me know i am down for anyhelp i can get.

Check the plug? Pull the stator cover and see nut to see if it spun? Toss a chain and knock the pickup loose?

You're sure you're using the right flywheel marks, and alignment dot/notch on the head? Old cam chains wear and jump around. WAY too few replace them when the top's off. It's under $15 for a good D.I.D. one.
