What do you guys think? 210mm is the size of the rear shock on the ZB. You can buy 8.5 inch(about a 1/4 of an inch longer then 210mm) with a 450 lbs spring kinda cheap? What do you guys think? A shock is a shock right? Please give me your .02 Thanks

A shock has not been a shock in my limited experience (But I am 200lbs). I bought a Thai shock that looks pretty bitch'n that I will sell to you for $50 if you sign a paper indicating you understand the said shock completely blows.

If you find something that works killer for less than < $500 you did well.

I'd try out some NSR shocks before running a mountain bike one. Kitaco, Takegawa, and Works shocks go for about $300

Go with the works shock if you are on a budget.

Here's my free consulting for the remainder of 2008.

Here's the pecking order of shocks from worst to best (in my experience and opinion.) I've run Ohlins and I've personally seen all of these shocks except the Quantums that make the Ohlins look cheap.

Asian Concepts Apparently around $50.

Groundament (YSS) Around $300

KYB - White Around $300

Works Around $300

KYB - Gold Around $400

2004 NSR50 made by Showa Find one used. New are pricey for what you get.

---------------------------

Burial - Makes Shift-UP $600

Nitron Race Version $1200

WP (if you can find one) Around $1000

Ohlins - Around $825 but discontinued from Ohlins, but my Euro buddy has a stash he'll sell me that he's not using.

Quantum Around $2K

If you are building a bike with premium front and rear suspension, go with a shock below the red line. If you are over 170lbs, the shocks above the red line are going to be soft.

That's my 2 cents.

So far I have personally tried a stock, Gregs $50 AC, KYB gold res, a Showa, and a Ohlins.

So far nothing compares to the Ohlins.

However i would be interested in someday seeing a shift-up, WP and a Quantum. I just dont want to pay for one knowing that the Ohlins is so freaking good first hand.

I was told by the US Ohlins rep that the HO418 shock is a made to order unit and still available for purchase. If I remeber correctly price was on the higer end of 700.

Thanks for the listing Dan.

The retail is $825 on the made to order units and differ from the one you have on the bike you got from Justin.

Iv personally used...

Stock (older NSR) shock, garbage.

KYB (both kinds) getting better.

Ohlins (now were talking).

On a budget shift-up and KYB makes very reasonable shocks. Don't waste you time on the AC shock. You get what you pay for. Im Using the Ohlins on my current build, but if i had to do it over (no able to buy a new Ohlins) id go with the Shift-up or (Burial) shock. Same for all intensive perpossess. But Very nice shocks. In all honestly ill probably pick one up for a future build.

The Ohlins is not a problem to get. Again if you have the loot go for it.

what makes the AC shock so bad? just wondering...

In fairness, I am a fat ass and have the thing cranked down as snug as it will go to get the seat as high as possible. In other applications with a normal size rider it might work fine.

Mine just feels essentially like a hardtail.
