That's a french Z50M model. I hope you have the keyswitch and right clamshell for that bike, as those two pieces are unique to the french M and not easy to find.

Nice looking project.

You will have to graft the taillight bracket on to the rear hoop-there are people selling one's for Z50A's they should be the same. The toolkit should hide some of the work if you choose not to repaint the whole frame. You will need the low muffler(and engine?),but the seat looks good and that's one of the most expensive(and hardest) items to find. Good luck!

You have the correct keyswitch. You are good there.

Finding a French Z50M clamshell may prove to be more difficult. Email the guys at Loading... and see if they can be of assistance.

:D thanks z, just sendt them a mail....

have read your thread on your z50m,

You have the important part-the seat cover whick looks to be in good condition. You can purchase the later black seat and put your cover on and you're good to go. David Blackwell's site will be your best resource for odds and ends you will need to bring her back-

Monkey Bike UK Z50M

The clamshell and low muffler will be tough like Z mentioned. I would go on Ebay Japan and search for a user named Segawasan,He is a good guy and has found me some difficult items in the past including original 5" Nittos. If you are going for a correct resto those,(like the seat cover) are must have items IMO. Best of luck and happy hunting!

hi monkeytom, the vin is 113638,,,, great info on the seat thanks,,

going too try save the seat, crossing fingers on the switch block:D

thanks mtom

Thanks r.l, Your vin is a very late one, close to the end of z50m production. The last being Z50M-114677. yours was probably made in very late 1969 or early 1970 one give away is the use of the Big No 8 on the head of the bolts.. and a reference in the parts book to a 1970 parts news bullitin after 113080 with some carb parts, and a late 1969 bullitin at 113564 with a change to the rear wheel hub....but who knows?

The tank emblems should be metal..

The engine you are looking for will be Z50ME-1237XX

I Have Z50M-113285 with engine Z50ME-123373

after the first 1000 bikes The engines are usually 10,000 more and a slightly higher number +60 to +100 aprox... mtom

Here's one on the opposite end of the spectrum

Frame #100-188 (engine is Z50ME-100172) If you look it has the "Z" on the right of the last VIN character. As near as we can tell it's one of perhaps 10-12 prototype french models known to have been produced. There is one other known to exist-both came out of a large collection in Cypress fifteen years ago. Here's a few more shots of the poor welding that was consistent on both frames, not nearly as smooth as the later production models. Another misconception was that the M was a 67 model only, not true as it was produced as a 68 model year as well in the higher VIN sequence you described. Thread hijack over!

r.l I get my Z50M parts Here MOTO*SHOP*M They Have most anything you need.. The piece of the frame that the taillight bolts to is 3000 yen and they have heavier seat hinges 4000 yen each Nicely made too.. Thats what i have used the original ones just bend...like what you have... You can save that seat, its better than many i have seen.. ask them about a set of engine cases? who knows...

Nifty thats a very rare early one cool. did the other one have the Z as well?...

as far as i can find out Z50M, were made from late 1966 and were still offered for sale new here in 1970..

The owners handbook that came with my early bike was printed Aug 1966.

i have a brochure with a French pre-production bike with chromed fenders and other strange bits..

The earliest bike i have is Z50M-100965 Z50ME-100995 yet to be restored, It has a lot of things that are different to the later Z50M's. like a

40Mph speedo.. early taillight bracket and early toolbox without the extra supports. and other stuff too..mtom

It's cool to see these up-close detail shots of a bike I may very well never see in real life.

40 mph speedo...man, what's it like to ride an unsuspended bike with 5" tires at 40?

Rough though those welds may be compared to later units, I wish I could do as well...
