Bought a pair of z50r's a few weeks ago. One was a pretty nice '79 that I'm not going to mess with besides eventually freshening up the motor....the other was a really rough '83. (Trust me, the pictures help it A LOT) The seller wanted a set price and wouldn't separate. I really only wanted one because with 3 z50s, 4 ct70's and 11 other bikes already, I really shouldn't be adding to the herd...especially when I plan on joining the military soon. Anyways, I let the addiction get the best of me and adopted two more. Did anyone really think I could walk away without both?

Decided I was going to do my own thing with the '83. Didn't want to part it out and split the bike up because it's too complete to be parted , and didn't really want to sell it because I figured I'd have trouble finding one if I ever wanted one again. Goal was to keep the cost to under 1000 bucks. Pretty unrealistic goal  So far, I've torn it a down, and sand basted everything. Got it off to the powder coat guy and should have it back tomorrow. Once I get it back, I should be able to get assembling. Spent a ton of cash on new tires, tubes, chain, brakes, sprockets, swingarm bushings, wheel bearings, seals, dust seals for the forks etc. It adds up quick. So far I'm $984 in to this build. That $984 is including $350 for the cost of the bike....I paid $700 for the pair. I just split it even and called them both $350 for my own records although they obviously are not equal in value.

My goal is to get it at least on 2 wheels by Sunday night. Hopefully I'll get the swing arm, and forks onto the frame...As long as I get the frame, forks, swingarm, etc. back tomorrow like I'm supposed to. I'll post more pics as I go. :D Please excuse the messy garage and the stupid blocks holding the bike up. Hahaha

Well, My Powder Coat guy was an idiot and PC'd right over the steering stem. :( Now the lower race wont fit. Got some sanding to to to remove it. Also threw the forks in the freezer and plan to heat the race to try to get a little more space. I believe it should be a press fit, But beating on it with a pipe shouldn't be necessary. What a headache. Won't be going back to this PC guy. Anyway, here are some pics of the little bit of progress I've made.

I like the all white! What color combo are you going with for the wheels?

I sandblasted the OEM rims and painted them black. Going to be using those beefy Carlisle sno-hog tires. Black hubs and brake covers too.

I did a quick photoshop mock up when I first planned this build to get an idea of how I wanted it to look. Please excuse the bad photoshop job hahaha! And the red shocks I wanted to be black as they are now, just didn't have the skills to do that easily in photoshop. I wanted it to be sort of a mini version of my race bikes.

Had some issues getting the forks on like I mentioned in my last post. Just makes me so mad. The powder coat guy I used is an idiot. :soapbox: So, after having to sand the powder coat off to get it to fit, I finally got the forks on.

A friend pointed out I took a step backwards and don't have the seat and tank now....I actually never bolted them down. Just threw it on for the picture! ;) Here's the progress so far. This is taking way longer than it should be. Going to have to order some new lock nuts, acorn nuts, and bolts...not sure how much I'll get done. McMaster Carr usually ships fast, but I think I might just run all the bolts through my ultrasonic cleaner and keep going with the assembly using the original bolts and acorns for now. I can easily replace those things later on...Really just want to get it together and rolling by tomorrow night. Seeing the progress is very motivating for me.

Well, The fork legs are trashed. Thought they could be saved. Nope. Waiting on fork legs. Not going to have a roller until those get here.

Got the plates from Razzo...he's a member on here. View Profile: RAZZO - PlanetMinis Forums He can get them in a few other colors I believe. These numbers are from my days racing 85's so I've had them for years! Just ran across them the other day and thought they would work great! I think I got them in 2007! LOL! They are 4" numbers I believe. I JUST threw the packaging away. It's made by Factory Effex. 3 to a pack. Here's a link. Dirt Bike Factory Effex Factory Numbers | MotoSport

Looking good man, reminds me of when I was in the middle of my build. Fairly similar to mine, except I went with black powder coat. Wish I had that motor, though!

I remember having a bitch of a time getting my throttle on the handlebars because the powder coat was too thick. Man that does piss ya off when it slows ya down!

Keep the pics coming!

It's looking awesome! I'm loving the white and black, I may steal that idea lol. I'm hoping to build an early 80s Z in the next year or so as well.

Thanks for the feedback guys!!! Sorry about the lack of pics....Debating where to go from here on the tank. Was going to do a plain ole Honda wing decal....Then I thought about making a custom sticker identical to the OEM sticker, just different colors....But now, I'm thinking it could be cool to do some lettering and pinstriping on it...

Bad deal on the motor...I messed up somewhere with the kickstart shaft. It moves in and out of the cases 1/4" and only catches when it's pushed in. Gotta tear it back apart to see what's going on. Luckily I never put oil in and and never tried to start it! I'm more concerned that something fell inside the motor than I am about missing something. I DO NOT want to ruin this motor after a small mistake. I can't stand letting that happen! So I'm digging in again sometime this week I hope. Curious to see what's going on inside there!

Also, Still waiting on parts. Thought I had everything. I was shorted a, ONE, freakin wheel bearing. :angry:Shipping is delayed from the storms once again. Honestly, the worst part of all of this is I work construction and we are slow on work because of the weather. Had two days off this week, and not much I can do. :( On top of that, I'm not making money to fund this addiction. If this is what meth addicts go through, I feel their pain. :1zhelp::1zhelp::1zhelp: Hahaha!

@olyelr, Your bike looks sweet with those colors! Being an Iowa boy, I love the Hawkeye colors ;) :notworthy: And oh yea, The PC stuff is just a mess. No fun at all. So much work, and it's hard to see the progress when moving so slow. Will be using a different PC guy next time for sure. All this work on my end that should of and could have been prevented if he took the steps to properly mask it off and plug screw holes!

@misfitsbob, Go for it man! The thing I love about seeing people "copy" other builds is that they never come out 100% the same. Things always change, so it'd not really a copy! If you do, I'd definitely be interested to see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll do my best to get some sort of an update soon!!!

I actually photoshopped up a bunch of different color combos with white and black to see what I liked best. Here are the other "options" I considered.

Please excuse the lack of photoshop skills... Picture #3 is the one I went with.

Really nice build. I think it looks great in all white. I'd try and find a grey, old school set of wings for the tank though. The modern honda wings just don't "go" with the vintage bike. Like these

I can't seem to find it. I think it was on eBay and I believe I was looking up tank decals for xr75's. I know they also have sweet red ones that might be cool if your looking for a pop of color.
