noise
Hi,
Regarding the tapping noise, it sounds as if the valves clearances aren't set properly and/or the timing is off. It will knock a bit if this is the case. Also, as mentioned in a post above, the engine is slightly louder with the kit, but if there is a definite loud knocking, that says that something is off.
Unless, its a defective piston (we have not seen one yet) its very unlikely that its piston slap. Also, you can check for that easily enough by inspecting the piston/head. Another thing that can cause knocking is a worn crankshaft but this is probably not the case on any XR50 unless its really been abused.
Recommend the following:
-Check the valves again - The valve clearances should be set to .002 to .003 (or .05mm) with a Honda feeler gauge or similar quality gauge (not an automotive gauge from the local auto store).
-Check timing again
-One person who had the problem (was it you redrr above?) emailed me yesterday and mentioned this problem. He then emailed back today and said he took of the head again to inspect and apparently the head gasket had shifted slightly and it appeared that the piston was hitting the metal ring. He put it back together and said everything was fine now. So, this is another possibility even though the dowels technically should keep the gasket in place.
-Use premium gas.
-Also, get a second opinion if someone is close by who is also familiar with these engines and/or bore kits and see what they think of the sound.
Also, you can find directions for installing the bore kit for the stock head as well as the high volume oil pump here:

As far as instructions for our kits, they are still in progress….Sorry about that….
In the meantime, Clymer service manuals (
www.clymer.com) provide detailed steps on valve clearance adjustments and are highly recommended if you don’t already have one. Same goes for the Honda XR50 service manual. We do sell these books and sell them at cost when we factor in our shipping and other costs. Our goal is not to make a profit on them but to offer them since we don’t currently have instructions for our kits. Sometimes you can get used Clymer manuals on
www.ebay.com and also
www.amazon.com so check out both sites. You might also want to check the local library as I've seen Clymer manual there before as well (you will run across older versions of the 50cc to 110c manual, but most of the instructions are still applicable). The XR50 Service manual can be ordered at any local Honda dealer. Both books tell you in detail how to rebuild and tune your engine properly plus a whole lot of other useful info. If I could copy pages out of them without getting into trouble, I would as they provide most answers to engine questions. Also, even when we do have instructions for the kits, they will not be a substitute for having one of these manuals. If you have only worked on two strokes, definitely get either a Honda shop or Clymers manual.
Regarding the throttle cable, this is the first time someone complained that is too short…. Sorry about that, but we cant make a “one fits all” cable. There are too many different setups out there.
Regarding the drain hose – as Jester said, just remove it or cut a few millimeters off the drain tube, then put the hose on.
Thanks,
Mike
