Sounds more like either a shift star or a possible bent shift fork.

The drum is just a guide for the shift fork.

The problem is probably the Shift forks most likely like Mike said (DOOD) but one thing to take note on is the fact that the Takagawa Shift drums are made of aluminum, which are lighter then the other shift drums on the market but it isn't as durable and with time the shift fork guide grooves in the Takagawa Shift drum will wear an indention/bump into the grooves and cause the shifting to not be as smooth and hang up at times once this happens.
do you have the 1 down 3 up drum? are they made of alumn too?
no i have the aluminum 4 up and its not the star but will it still work like goood even tho there is a lil bump/indention
Is this a gradual, or sudden change, or been that way the whole time? Too many guys use WAY too much force on the shifter and things get sloppy and bent.
I've seen those aluminum drums F%&@ up after a crash on the shifter side of the bike. BBR sent me one of those Tak drums a long time ago when I was first doing the 4th gear drum thing. I looked at it, then called them and sent it back to them as I wanted the nice steel (I think the BBR drums are the OEM drums from Thailand) stock drum-- more durable. I had my motor all apart, and I had to wait a week and a half to get one-- I was kinda pissed. --- L*64
Do you by chance have a "quick shift shaft" also? If so, I have heard and experienced the problem with missed shifts if you lightly shift it. It has happened to me on downshifts and not upshifts.

Just a thought,

Dan
