Hi, I have a new SSR 160TR bike. I haven't finished setting it up yet and break in, but I have noticed its around 103db from 20" away idling, and it really doesnt die down very quick with distance. I havent tested db level with throttle yet, but imagine that is quite high. It is way to loud for neighborhood use. I have a predator 212cc engine in my minibike and that is borderline too loud, but that engine just has a dinky square exhaust. This will cause problems quickly as it is Harley loud and really should require hearing protection since its louder than my 24HP ride mower, which also has a dinky exhaust. I have heard that repacking the muffler might be required since they can be poorly done from factory. Has anyone done this, and did it make a big difference? What packing did you use? Are there other options? I heard a stock CRF50/70 muffler is quiet, but I cannot find one on craigslist within 300+ miles. Is there an exterior wrap that would fit as well? or a filter to stick over the end of the exhaust? Is there a way to check for exhaust leaks that could be making it louder (other than by ear?). </Barrage of questions> I cant be the only person with this problem unless my bikes muffler is a defect - I don't have another around for comparison. A performance hit is not a concern as long as it isn't harming the engine.

For the muffler packing to work your muffler has to have a perforated core like this http://www.rideasia.net/motorcycle-...58d1392033857-crf-muffler-operation-exh.1.jpg. You should be able to shine a light in the end of your muffler to see if this is the type you have. You should see a tube that runs the length of the muffler with small holes in it. This perforated tube is what you wrap the packing around. Yes it will make a huge difference in the sound output.

great info, thanks for all the replies. Yes it is preforated, I can see the stock packing in the holes although it doesn't look densely packed. the lack of a spark arrestor is something I noticed, I will try and find one... I just need to figure out where that goes.

TBolt sells this:

But have no idea if it fits my bike stock or not. Too bad no one makes one that points the exhaust at the ground. I hear that makes a difference too.

My buddy had a ssr 125 and it was raspy as hell. It was so annoying I told him he couldnt ride it at my track anymore untill he did something about it. He ended up getting a cheap china exhaust off ebay that sounded WAY better, it wasnt a Yosh, FMF, or Pro Circuit sound but vast improvement over the stock exhaust. A spark arrestor will cut the sound and power a little, the spark arrestor is a small cone shaped screen that fits in the end of the can.

Does anyone know of a silencer that will fit the SSR 160TR and have a spark arrestor and be designed as a quiet muffler? Again some power loss is not an issue for me. The pipe opening on the stock silencer is 38mm(1.5").

TBolt sells this silencer, which says "Quiet" but doesnt have a spark arrestor (maybe there is one available for it?) but there is no info on this thing online for reviews etc..

Im hoping to spend <$200 total to make this quiet.

I dont want to dump more and more money into things that wont work. I have new packing/rivet gun coming tomorrow and will try that first, but Im thinking i need a spark arrestor to take the edge off.

I just stopped by SSR HQ to get some parts for my son's bike. While I was there i checked out the 160TR muffler and it does have a perforated core so you will be good to go with packing. That will make a massive differnce in sound output vs no packing. I am planning to get a 160TR for my son next year.

The 160TR did have packing, but I questioned the quality/amount of packing.

Im trying to open my silencer now.. I got all the rivets out and I can pop off the end that goes to the rest of the exhaust pipe, but I cannot get the tail end of the silencer off or the perforated tube. any ideas?

So I bought a "TRC Quiet Muffler" off Tbolt that came yesterday.

It slides on just like the stock silencer, but looks more restricted inside to reduce noise. The bracket it comes with is a joke and doesn't actually fit, but the stock SSR 160TR bracket worked.
It knocked me from about 95db on the stock exhaust down to ~84db idling. Much better and I think good enough for neighbors. My bike is still not ride-able and wont be until at least Friday because of missing parts though so I cant say how loud it will be under load, or how much power the small exhaust outlet will rob. Ordered on June 8th but wont be able to use until July 3rd :(
