In comparing the fork legs from a 1972-1978 z50 and the 79-87 z50 are the fork legs actually the same just with different boots?
if i take apart forks from a 1976 can i use them for a 1986 model if i change the parts and the boot??

I'm not sure but are the holes for the split pin that locates the upper collar the same? Maybe its jut me but I put older legs on my Z50R and when the wheel is off, the legs point in two different directions. I have to twist them to get them to line up.

You are correct, the lower and upper portions are the same, and can be interchanged.
