Hello everyone, im an OSU student in Columbus Ohio, got this nsr50 two years ago. I got it with a bit hesitation but it is not a big problem for riding around in the parking lot. Now im back from the summer holiday and planning to take it for track practice, it has been sit in the garage for at least 5 months, yesterday i started it up and warmed for mins, it idled fine, but as i rode it and tried to rev high, the bike felt no power and very sluggish, highest rev i tried was around 6000-7000, it seems dont want to go higher. I pulled out the plug, there is black carbon all formed around, the bike is all stock, ive never touched the carb, maybe it is running too lean? Please forgive my english, i appreciate for any help and suggestions, hope to get it on the track soon.?

The carb will need to be completely disassembled, and thoroughly cleaned with carb or contact cleaner and compressed air. Most assuredly, the carb inner passageways are partially blocked with ethanol buildup, impeding fuel flow.

Hello, so i took the carb off and disassembled everything i could, and cleaned it thoroughly. It was pretty clean before i cleaned it, it didnt look like there was a lot of dirt in it. I then put it back on, and the bike still ran sluggish, so i tried a new spark plug since the original one is all black, then the i felt it's better than before, but could still obviously feel the sluggish. I noticed that the bike could go high RPM, but it doesnt produce much power at high RPM as expected, the RPM doesnt go up and down very rapidly, it is tardy. Do you think it might be running too rich? How could i make it leaner? Really appreciate for your help.

What is your 2 strike oil to gas mix ratio?

I run mine at 44:1

Bike must be warned up yo achieve better revving .

If you have an air filter on the bike try it without it .might be too rich I've seen that happen .

I run with a metal mech filter ..

Hi there, thank you for your help. I think i run 50:1, i am not 100% sure since the gas has been there for about half of a year. I have tried to let it warm for 10 Mins, but it still has no change. There is no air filter on it as it comes from factory, do you think i should try to make it run leaner? Would low oil level cause this poor performance? I have never changed engine oil since i got it.

Hmm..make sure to look into a manual because as far as I remember on my bike there is no engine oil that's trans fluid ..mine was low on trans fluid from the factory but it ran fine ..I changed it though..

You need a fresh mix of high octane gas and 2 stroke oil...might have to clean excess oil out of the carb and install a new plug ..

If you locate a parts manual all the parts can be ordered from a motorcycle shop that deals with honda using the part numbers ..many jets are universal ..

Note my bike still has the stock jets in it .

Any luck?
Sorry for replying this late, i have finally fixed the problem. I have firstly changed the main jet to 102, and raised the clip one up, remixed the fuel with 44:1 ratio, the bike got leaner and ran better, then i changed the engine oil, it runs much better with the fresh oil. The previous owner did not change the factory oil i think, because it only had very little oil in it. Finally it runs perfect, but it needs about 15minutes to warm up to get the best performance, but i guess that is just how the 2 strokes work. I really appreciate for everyone's help!

You changed the gear oil? Im experiencing the same issue you are with a Derbi engine. Supposedly the bike had been jetted already, unsure as to which jets though. However, im almost certain the main jet needs a washer on it, and mine doesnt have it. Could i compensate by raising the clip up? If not, do jet kits include the washer typically? Thanks guys!
