Hi my name is Logan. I’ve just picked up a 2003 XR80R from a friend of mine. Needs a top end, spokes, footpegs, brakes and clutch needs to be looked at.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading the past week or so and there doesn’t seem to be too much info out there for the 80s. It looks like most people prefer to ditch the 80 for a 100 to start with since there is more aftermarket support for them, or maybe it’s a lack of piston options for the 80.. With some deep digging I found mentions of some interesting ways to get the 80 up in cc. I’m going to try and work with the 80 first. I’ll make a build thread to document my success or failure.

Anyways, I look forward to being part of the community. Glad to be here, thank you for having me.

What part of MS you from? I'm in the Madison area

Yea the consensus is the 100 is a better platform to start from since the differences are just enough to make it hard to find parts for the 80(used to be a 120 kit but I cant find it anymore) but the mounts are the same so you can just swap in a 100 motor with no mods

I live in Oxford. I’m shooting for 92-95 cc with the 80 before I try and swap to another engine.

I started pulling the top end apart and wasn’t happy about how the cam journals looked. They’re slightly grooved, enough to catch a fingernail on. A new head might be in order :/
