Hello all!

I decided to break out my 1973 CT70 after 10 years in hiatis. After replacing fuel lines, oil, plug, points, tires (I put 4x10 road tires on), air filter, battery, chain and spockets, and brakes, I also rebuilt the carb.

To my surprise and great glee, it fired right up on the 3rd kick! Its now running great, so I dug out the title, got some new plates, and am now terrorizing the neighborhood again! ;-)

Anywho, it sure doesnt seem as fast as it was when I was 12 , but even with my...um...er..."larger girth" sall we say, it tops out at 42 mph.

So im looking for more speed/power. First gear seems very short...anybody have any sucess in changing the gearing for more top end?

Also, I see there are big bore (88cc) kits availible, with even a "racing" head with big valves and cam for about $400, but Ive also seen complete 110cc engine/tranny assemblies, that will bolt right in, but I believe there are of Chinese make. In either case, I havnt been able to locate any real numbers on what kind of increase I would achieve.

With that said, anybody have any thoughts/pro/cons/comments on which way I should go?

Thanks much!

Lets seem some pic's of this fantastic little machine!

The 88 Takegawa kit along with +R head is amazingly fast. We race with a group of guys that have that top end kit and they are flying out on the track.

If first gear is too short, try a smaller rear sprocket or larger front sprocket.

42mph for a stock CT70 is darn good.

If you need more power, get a tbparts.com 88cc Big Bore Kit, cam and 20mm carb setup and you'll get 55mph out of the bike with 16T front and 35T rear gearing.

The restomod bug is strong around these parts and once you start, it never ends..

Gasturbine...does this mean you work for Rolls-Royce in MTV? I used to work there. I've got a few CT70's in my garage and have done all sorts of mods to them. You'll find that many on this site are quite knowledgeable on the subject. Welcome and enjoy your stay...

Hey, thanks for all the quick replies!

Shes a little rough...a little topical rust, and could use a paint job, but Ill get some pics posted soon.

Money is not a real issue, but I certainly dont want to dump hundreds of dollars into her, for just a few mphs. I guess Im looking to getting on arterial roads (45 mph limits) safely.

And Im not at the point that I want to do a full restore either, but maybe down the road.

The 42 mph top speed, is after a loooong and steady climb. It gets right up to about 35 pretty well, but the next 7 come sort of sloooow. :(

Thanks again,
