Black Spark Plug help

ok i might be able to get my hands on a z in great condition (my 1st Mini) but the owner (hasnt ridden it in years) tells me it makes the plug black every 10 mins or so. i was wondering how/if i can fix it short of a new engine

its prob just running rich....it could be something as simple as a too-dirty air filter or clogged air passage in the carb...hardly major motor issues

is the plug a dull, sooty black, or a slick shiny black?
